color-commentary

color-commentary is a skill for Claude Code from ai-analyst-lab/ai-analyst-plugin. It costs 89 tokens per session (2,315 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A chart-writing rule that adds a short explanation of the main point readers should notice. The explanation appears with the chart and in a separate Markdown file.

In plain words
What is it for?
Adding commentary after rendering, saving, embedding, captioning, or presenting charts, including charts that already exist.
Why use it?
Charts can show many facts without making the important one clear. This adds the analyst's interpretation so readers know what to look at.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00089 $0.02315
Opus 5 $0.00044 $0.01157
Sonnet 5 $0.00018 $0.00463
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00231

Security

Grade A, and why

color-commentary scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Skill: Color Commentary

Purpose

A chart shows everything and emphasizes nothing. The reader's eye goes to the biggest bar — which is almost never the interesting part. Color commentary is the analyst's voice pointing at the thing the chart contains but does not announce.

This skill enforces one rule: every chart is followed by 1-2 sentences saying what to notice.

When to Use

Immediately after rendering any chart, and before presenting it. This runs alongside the other output skills:

  • visualization-patterns builds the chart correctly (form, color, marks, themes).
  • color-commentary (this skill) says what the chart means.
  • always-compare verifies every number in that commentary carries an anchor.

The Rule

Never ship a chart without 1-2 sentences below it telling the reader what to notice. Describe the insight, never the chart.

The commentary sits directly below the figure — not in a footnote, not three paragraphs later. It is the first thing read after the image.

Where the commentary lives

Commentary written only into a chat reply does not count. Charts get shared — dropped into Slack, pasted into decks, attached to tickets — and the moment the PNG leaves the conversation, chat-only commentary is gone and the reader is back to guessing. The insight has to travel with the file.

So every chart ships the commentary in two places:

Where What goes there Why
The chart's subtitle (baked into the image) The insight, compressed to one line Survives being shared standalone. This is the slot most charts waste on a description.
A sidecar .md next to the image (monthly_orders_2024.png -> monthly_orders_2024.md) The full 1-2 sentence commentary, the anchored numbers, and what it means for the decision Room to say the whole thing; feeds reports and decks.

The subtitle is the one that matters most, because it is the one that cannot get separated from the chart. The subtitle slot is for the insight, not the summary. If your subtitle would still be true with the data swapped out, you wasted it:

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

color-commentary is a skill published in the GitHub repository ai-analyst-lab/ai-analyst-plugin (32 stars, last pushed 13d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 89 tokens to every session and 2,315 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
