external-secrets

external-secrets is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Aidas-dev/k8s-agent-skills. It costs 56 tokens per session (2,395 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to External Secrets Operator, a Kubernetes system that copies secret values from services such as Vault or AWS into Kubernetes Secrets. It covers the resources and authentication settings used for that process.

In plain words
What is it for?
Configuring SecretStore and ExternalSecret resources, connecting Kubernetes to Vault or cloud providers, templating secret data, and managing authentication and certificates.
Why use it?
It helps keep sensitive values in an external secret manager while making them available to Kubernetes workloads. It also explains how the operator validates and updates those values.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00056 $0.02395
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.01197
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00479
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00239

Security

Grade A, and why

external-secrets scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

External Secrets Operator

Overview

External Secrets Operator (ESO) synchronizes Kubernetes Secrets from external secret management systems. It watches custom resources and reconciles K8s Secrets from the provider's values.

CRDs: SecretStore, ClusterSecretStore, ExternalSecret, ClusterExternalSecret, PushSecret, ClusterPushSecret.

Latest: chart 2.6.0, app v2.6.0.

Architecture

K8s API (ExternalSecret CR)
→ ESO controller watches for changes
→ Queries external provider (Vault, AWS, GCP, Azure...)
      → Creates/updates K8s Secret
→ Template engine processes data (v2)

Three components:

Component Role
Core Controller Watches ExternalSecret/SecretStore CRs, reconciles Secrets, calls provider APIs
Cert Controller Manages webhook certificate lifecycle (can use cert-manager)
Webhook Validating/mutating webhook for CRD validation

CRDs

SecretStore / ClusterSecretStore

Defines how ESO authenticates to a provider. SecretStore is namespaced, ClusterSecretStore is cluster-scoped.

apiVersion: external-secrets.io/v1beta1
kind: ClusterSecretStore
metadata:
  name: vault-backend
spec:
  provider:
    vault:
      server: "http://vault.vault:8200"
      path: "secret"
      version: v2
      auth:
        kubernetes:
          mountPath: "kubernetes"
          role: "eso-reader"
          serviceAccountRef:
            name: "external-secrets"

Key fields:

Field Description
spec.provider Provider type (vault, aws, gcp, azure, etc.)
spec.retrySettings Max retries + retry interval on provider failure
spec.conditions Service reference for namespace validation

Provider auth methods (Vault):

Auth Config Use case
kubernetes SA bound to role via vault policy write + K8s auth role In-cluster, SA-based
token Static token from SecretKeyRef External or bootstrapping
approle roleId + secretId from SecretKeyRef Machine-to-machine
cert Client cert from SecretKeyRef mTLS
jwt JWT from SA or SecretKeyRef OIDC-integrated

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

external-secrets is a skill published in the GitHub repository Aidas-dev/k8s-agent-skills (2 stars, last pushed 24d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 56 tokens to every session and 2,395 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
