netbird-cli

netbird-cli is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Aidas-dev/k8s-agent-skills. It costs 43 tokens per session (1,927 once invoked), scanned D, original, MIT.

A guide for the NetBird client command line. NetBird creates private network connections between devices and services, using WireGuard underneath.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to connect or disconnect devices, check status, expose services, access Kubernetes, configure networks, use SSH, and debug connections.
Why use it?
It puts connection, access, and troubleshooting tasks in one set of terminal commands for servers, desktops, and routing devices.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00043 $0.01927
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00963
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00385
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00193

Security

Grade D, and why

netbird-cli scanned grade D with 3 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 173 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

netbird-cli — Client

For Terraform provider see netbird-terraform. For K8s operator see netbird-operator.

Install

curl -fsSL https://pkgs.netbird.io/install.sh | sudo bash # Linux
# or: apt install netbird / dnf install netbird / pacman -S netbird
# GUI on desktop: netbird-ui (Wails v3 app since v0.75.0)

Client runs as a daemon (netbird service run); the CLI talks to it over a Unix socket. Default config: /var/lib/netbird/default.json.

Register & Connect

# Interactive SSO (opens browser)
netbird up

# Headless / server / routing peer — setup key from Management dashboard or API
netbird up --setup-key <key>
netbird up --setup-key-file <file>

# SSO without browser (print URL + QR for phone)
netbird login --no-browser
netbird login --qr

# Re-auth without tearing down the tunnel
netbird login --extend

Setup-key peers don't expire (not subject to login session expiration) — always use setup keys for routing peers/gateways.

Connect / Disconnect

Command Purpose
netbird up Connect (WireGuard up, connect to management, establish P2P)
netbird up --disable-dns Connect without DNS config
netbird up --disable-firewall Without firewall rule changes
netbird up --disable-ipv6 Without IPv6 overlay
netbird up --block-inbound No inbound connections (overrides policies)
netbird up --enable-rosenpass [Experimental] Post-quantum security
netbird down Disconnect everything
netbird deregister / netbird logout Deregister peer from management (REMOVES from network)

Status

netbird status # connection status + peer info
netbird status -d # detailed human-readable
netbird status --json # JSON (jq-able)
netbird status -y # YAML
netbird status -4 # only overlay IPv4 (e.g. 100.64.0.33)
netbird status -6 # only overlay IPv6
netbird status --check live # health check, exit 0/1 (live|ready|startup)
netbird status -d --filter-by-status connected
netbird status -d --filter-by-connection-type P2P

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

netbird-cli is a skill published in the GitHub repository Aidas-dev/k8s-agent-skills (2 stars, last pushed 22d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 43 tokens to every session and 1,927 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it D with 3 findings (asks for root, downloads and executes remote code, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
