tailscale

tailscale is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Aidas-dev/k8s-agent-skills. It costs 0 tokens per session (1,217 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for using Tailscale, a mesh VPN that connects devices over private network addresses. It covers device discovery, connectivity checks, subnet routing, and Kubernetes or Talos integration.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect connected devices, test peer reachability, configure routes, and integrate Tailscale with Talos Linux or Kubernetes.
Why use it?
It helps diagnose changing device connections using the current tailnet status instead of relying on outdated IP addresses or configuration files.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.01217
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00609
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00243
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00122

Measured 6d ago against content hash 9c54a19379d4, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

tailscale scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 111 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Tailscale

HARD RULE: Always run tailscale status --json before assuming any IP addresses. The tailnet is the source of truth — more authoritative than files, config, or code. Device IPs change, nodes join/leave, routes shift. Status tells you what's actually reachable right now.

Sub-Skills

Task Load skill What it does
Talos-specific Tailscale integration (system extension, machine config, node IP config, subnet routes) tailscale-talos ExtensionServiceConfig, certSANs, kubelet.nodeIP, IP forwarding, static pods, cluster cross-connect
Tailscale CLI — status, ping, up, down, ip (inline, no sub-skill needed) Reference for common diagnostic commands

Decision Flow

  • Need to find a device's current IP? → run tailscale status --json (source of truth, don't guess)
  • Need to check if a peer is online / direct vs relay? → run tailscale status --json
  • Integrating Tailscale into Talos Linux machine config? → tailscale-talos
  • Configuring tailscale in Kubernetes (operator, subnet router, proxy)? → tailscale-talos (K8s section)
  • Debugging connectivity between two devices? → tailscale ping <ip-or-hostname> then tailscale status
  • Managing ACLs, tags, keys via API? → use curl against Tailscale API directly

CLI Reference

tailscale status — Source of Truth

# Human-readable table (default)
tailscale status

# Machine-readable JSON — preferred for automation
tailscale status --json

# Filter to only active peers
tailscale status --active

JSON output structure (tailscale status --json):

Field Description
Self.TailscaleIPs IPs of the current machine
Self.DNSName MagicDNS FQDN of current machine
Peer Object keyed by node key, each entry is a PeerStatus
Peer[HOST].TailscaleIPs Array of IPs for peer
Peer[HOST].DNSName FQDN like host.tailnet-id.ts.net.
Peer[HOST].OS Operating system string
Peer[HOST].Online Boolean — connected to control plane
Peer[HOST].Active Boolean — recent traffic (last ~2 min)
Peer[HOST].ExitNode Boolean — currently selected exit node
Peer[HOST].ExitNodeOption Boolean — can be exit node
Peer[HOST].Relay DERP relay region if not direct
Peer[HOST].CurAddr Current direct endpoint address
Peer[HOST].Tags ACL tags applied to node
Peer[HOST].PrimaryRoutes Subnet routes this node advertises

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

tailscale is a skill published in the GitHub repository Aidas-dev/k8s-agent-skills (2 stars, last pushed 23d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 1,217 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
