research-and-source-capture

research-and-source-capture is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Akakaui/visual-browser-agent. It costs 32 tokens per session (809 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A method for collecting public documentation, code examples, diagrams, and release notes into a searchable evidence library. Each item keeps its source URL and capture time so its origin can be checked.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to gather API documentation, configuration examples, architecture diagrams, PDFs, and changelogs for research or implementation work.
Why use it?
It prevents research findings and copied examples from becoming a pile of untraceable notes. Organizing items by topic makes them easier to find and verify later.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00032 $0.00809
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.00404
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00162
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00081

Security

Grade A, and why

research-and-source-capture scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Research and Source Capture Skill

When to Use

Use this skill to build an evidence library from public web research:

  • Documentation pages and API references
  • Code examples and configuration snippets
  • Diagrams, charts, and architecture figures
  • Release notes and changelogs
  • Any task needing verifiable, attributable sources

Instructions

Collection Workflow

  1. navigate(url) to each source page
  2. inspect_page() to extract headings, body text, and code blocks
  3. Write extracted content to the evidence library as markdown/plain text
  4. download_file(url) for binary assets (images, PDFs, archives)
  5. Record source URL + timestamp for EVERY captured item

Evidence Library Layout

Organize by topic so the library stays searchable:

evidence-library/
  <topic>/
    index.json # searchable metadata for every item
    docs/           # extracted markdown/text/code
    assets/ # downloaded diagrams, PDFs, images
    screenshots/ # only when visuals matter

Item Metadata

Every entry in index.json must include:

  • sourceUrl - canonical URL of the page
  • capturedAt - ISO 8601 timestamp of capture
  • title and itemType (doc | code | diagram | release-note)
  • filePath - local path where the content was saved

Screenshot Policy

Capture screenshots ONLY when they add information beyond the text:

  • Good: visual layouts, rendered diagrams, UI states, charts
  • Avoid: plain prose or code blocks (extract text instead)
  • Use descriptive names: <topic>-<slug>-<sequence>.png

Searchability Rules

  • Keep index.json keys stable across topics for easy aggregation
  • Prefer extracted text over images so content stays grep-able
  • Never silently overwrite an item - append a new versioned entry

Output

{
  "topic": "auth-patterns",
  "items": [
    {
      "sourceUrl": "https://example.com/docs/oauth",
      "capturedAt": "2026-08-23T10:15:00Z",
      "title": "OAuth 2.0 flow overview",
      "itemType": "doc",
      "filePath": "evidence-library/auth-patterns/docs/oauth-overview.md",
      "screenshot": null
    }
  ]
}

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
