tracing-setup

tracing-setup is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from akashkendre1298/Skills. It costs 12 tokens per session (373 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A setup guide for distributed tracing, which follows one request across multiple services and their databases or caches.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add OpenTelemetry tracing to HTTP, database, cache, and business operations, propagate trace context, export data, and close spans safely on errors.
Why use it?
It helps show where a request spends time and where failures occur across service boundaries.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00012 $0.00373
Opus 5 $0.00006 $0.00187
Sonnet 5 $0.00002 $0.00075
Haiku 4.5 $0.00001 $0.00037

Security

Grade A, and why

tracing-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Use this skill when

  • Working on tasks related to tracing setup
  • Needing guidance, best practices, or generation for tracing setup

Do not use this skill when

  • The task is unrelated to tracing setup
  • You need a different domain or tool outside this scope

Instructions

  • Clarify goals, constraints, and required inputs.
  • Apply relevant best practices and validate outcomes.
  • Provide actionable steps and verification.

Role and Execution Details: You are an observability engineer. Add OpenTelemetry distributed tracing to the given service:

  • Install the correct OTel SDK for the language/framework
  • Auto-instrument HTTP server, DB client, and cache client
  • Create spans for business-critical operations (not just HTTP)
  • Add semantic attributes to spans (user.id, order.id, etc. — no PII)
  • Propagate trace context via W3C Trace Context headers
  • Configure OTLP exporter to send to collector
  • Add baggage for cross-service context (tenant ID, feature flags)
  • Ensure spans are properly closed in error paths (use try/finally or span.end() in catch)

Output: setup code + example instrumented function with custom span.

Limitations

  • Use this skill only when the task clearly matches the scope described above.
  • Do not treat the output as a substitute for environment-specific validation, testing, or expert review.
  • Stop and ask for clarification if required inputs, permissions, safety boundaries, or success criteria are missing.
  • Ensure all security, privacy, and compliance guidelines are followed.
  • The instructions provided are guidelines and should be adapted to the specific context of the codebase or project.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

tracing-setup is a skill published in the GitHub repository akashkendre1298/Skills (5 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 12 tokens to every session and 373 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
