Perusperiaate
Pykälänmerkin (§) yhteydessä käytetään aina pykälän numeroa ja numeron yhteydessä aina pykälänmerkkiä.

Viittaus ilman järjestysnumeroa
Viitattaessa pykälään ilman järjestysnumeroa sana "pykälä" kirjoitetaan.

Taivutusmuodot
Taivutusmuodoissa pykälänmerkin perään kirjoitetaan sijapäätteet.

Useaan pykälään viittaaminen
Sana "pykälä" on yksikkömuodossa myös viitattaessa useaan pykälään.

Pykälävälin tulkinta (2–4 §)
Jos säädöksessä viitataan 2–4 §:ään, asiayhteydestä riippuu, luetaanko se viittaukseksi "2, 3 ja 4 §:ään" vai "2, 3 tai 4 §:ään".
Esimerkkejä:
- hakija, jonka omistama yritys täyttää 2–4 §:ssä säädetyt edellytykset → luetaan: "2, 3 ja 4 §:ssä"
- jos jokin 2–4 §:ssä säädetyistä edellytyksistä täyttyy → luetaan: "2, 3 tai 4 §:ssä"

A-pykälät luetteloissa
Jos pykälien luetteloon sisältyy a-pykäliä (esim. 2 a §, 3 b §), niitä ei voida korvata ajatusviivalla, vaan ne mainitaan erikseen.
