phren-sync

phren-sync is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from alaarab/phren. It costs 16 tokens per session (2,095 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A profile-based system for syncing Claude skills and project settings between computers. Profiles decide which projects belong on each machine.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to pull and push skills, instructions, and project configuration across machines.
Why use it?
It prevents unrelated or private project files from being copied to every computer and keeps shared configuration consistent.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00016 $0.02095
Opus 5 $0.00008 $0.01047
Sonnet 5 $0.00003 $0.00419
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00210

Security

Grade A, and why

phren-sync scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

phren-sync - Profile-aware sync

Sync your Claude skills and project config across machines using profiles that control what goes where.

Bidirectional sync between your personal phren instance and the machines you work on. Profile-aware: only syncs what belongs on this machine.

Prerequisites

This skill requires a phren repository. If you don't have one yet, see "New machine setup" at the bottom.

Expected structure:

~/.phren/ # or wherever your phren repo lives
  global/ # skills and config for all projects
    skills/ # global skill files (.md)
    CLAUDE.md           # global Claude instructions
  <project>/            # per-project config
    CLAUDE.md
    skills/
    summary.md
  profiles/             # machine profile definitions
    work.yaml
    personal.yaml
  machines.yaml # maps machine names to profiles

If any of these are missing, the skill will tell you what to create and how.

How it works

Phren uses profiles to decide what goes where. A profile is a list of projects. A machine is mapped to a profile. When you sync, only the projects in your machine's profile get linked.

Sync down (pull to this machine)

When the user says "get my skills", "sync my config", "pull from phren", or just "phren-sync":

1. Find the phren directory

PHREN_DIR="${PHREN_DIR:-$HOME/.phren}"
ls "$PHREN_DIR" 2>/dev/null

If the directory doesn't exist, tell the user:

"No phren repo found at ~/.phren. Clone yours with git clone <your-repo-url> ~/.phren, or set PHREN_DIR to point to a different location."

2. Figure out which machine this is

cat ~/.phren/.machine-id 2>/dev/null || hostname

If ~/.phren/.machine-id doesn't exist, ask the user to pick a name:

"I need a machine name to look up your profile. What should I call this machine? (e.g. 'work-laptop', 'home-desktop')"

Then save it:

mkdir -p ~/.phren && echo "work-laptop" > ~/.phren/.machine-id

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

phren-sync is a skill published in the GitHub repository alaarab/phren (4 stars, last pushed 9d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 16 tokens to every session and 2,095 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
