kill-switch

kill-switch is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from AlgoChains/algochains-mcp-server. It costs 0 tokens per session (522 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An emergency control for closing all open trading positions across configured brokers and stopping running trading bots. It requires owner verification and an exact confirmation phrase.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it only during a confirmed trading emergency to cancel orders, close positions, stop bots, verify that positions are closed, and send incident updates.
Why use it?
It provides a controlled response when trading automation must stop immediately. The safeguards reduce the chance of accidental use.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00000 $0.00522
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00261
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00104
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00052

Measured 3d ago against content hash 5c5904c3ee50, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

kill-switch scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

kill-switch

Tier: 3 (irreversible 🔴)
Trigger: Emergency only — REQUIRES owner confirmation
MCP Tool: run_algoclaw_skill("kill-switch", {"confirm": "FLATTEN_ALL", "reason": "..."})

What It Does

Emergency flatten of ALL positions across ALL configured brokers simultaneously. Stops all running bots. Posts full incident report to Slack.

Owner Verification

Skill REFUSES to execute unless:

  1. Caller Slack user ID matches OWNER_SLACK_USER_ID (set in .env)
  2. Explicit confirm string = "FLATTEN_ALL" passed in args
  3. Rate limit: max 1 execution per hour

Steps

  1. Verify owner ID and confirm string
  2. Log emergency event to algoclaw/state/kill_switch_log.jsonl
  3. Send pre-action alert: "KILL SWITCH ACTIVATED by {owner}" to #incident-response
  4. For each broker with open positions: a. Tradovate: cancel all orders → flatten all positions b. Alpaca: cancel all orders → flatten all positions c. OANDA: close all open trades
  5. Stop all bot processes (SIGTERM with 5s timeout then SIGKILL)
  6. Verify all positions at 0 via get_positions() for each broker
  7. Send post-action confirmation with list of closed positions + amounts
  8. Update AlgoClaw state: mode = "emergency_stopped"

Output Format

{
  "kill_switch_activated": true,
  "timestamp": "2026-04-08T14:30:00Z",
  "reason": "VIX spiked to 55, manual emergency",
  "actions": {
    "tradovate": {"positions_closed": 2, "orders_cancelled": 3},
    "alpaca": {"positions_closed": 0, "orders_cancelled": 0}
  },
  "bots_stopped": ["MNQ", "CL", "MES", "NQ"],
  "verification": {
    "tradovate_open_positions": 0,
    "alpaca_open_positions": 0
  },
  "incident_posted_to_slack": true
}

Recovery

After kill switch, system stays in emergency_stopped mode.
To resume: run_algoclaw_skill("resume-trading", {"confirm": "RESUME", "reason": "..."})

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

kill-switch is a skill published in the GitHub repository AlgoChains/algochains-mcp-server (1 stars, last pushed 10d ago), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 522 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
