contract-compat

contract-compat is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ALTEN-group/coding-pal. It costs 78 tokens per session (635 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A compatibility checker for comparing two OpenAPI 3.x documents or JSON Schemas. OpenAPI describes a web API's public operations and data; the checker reports whether changes are compatible or would break consumers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it in CI or an agent workflow when an API contract or schema changes, especially to detect removed operations, changed responses, new required inputs, or new security requirements.
Why use it?
It catches public interface changes that could make other software fail, and blocks breaking changes unless a human-signed decision record accepts them.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00078 $0.00635
Opus 5.5 $0.00031 $0.00254
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00127
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

contract-compat scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 3 executable files (scripts/contract-compat.mjs, scripts/contract-compat.test.mjs, scripts/contract-fixture.mjs), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Contract Compat

Deterministic Contract & Schema Compatibility gate. It compares the released contract (base) with the changed contract (head) and prints every change as BREAKING or compatible. A breaking public contract is a Critical blast radius, so it only passes with a signed decision record.

When to Use This Skill

  • A change touches an OpenAPI document or a JSON Schema that other systems consume.
  • CI (Prove) must block a pull request that removes an operation or response, removes or retypes a response property, adds a required request input, or adds security to an operation.
  • A breaking change is intended and must be released through an Architect-signed decision record.

Path resolution

Resolve references/ and scripts/ relative to this skill's install directory (the folder that contains this SKILL.md), not the consumer repository root or the current shell cwd. If the skill was installed under .agents/skills/contract-compat/ or .claude/skills/contract-compat/, use that base path. Run the script from the repository root and write <skill-dir> as that install path.

Workflow

  1. Read references/contract-compat-contract.md now. It is the authoritative source for what counts as breaking, supported documents, output format, and the decision-record rule.
  2. Produce JSON for both sides. YAML, Swagger 2.0, external $ref, and Pact are not supported: convert or bundle first.
git show origin/main:openapi.json > base.json
  1. Run the gate from the repository root:
node <skill-dir>/scripts/contract-compat.mjs --base base.json --head openapi.json

# Intended breaking change, released by an Accepted decision record signed by the Architect
node <skill-dir>/scripts/contract-compat.mjs --base base.json --head openapi.json \
  --allow-breaking docs/decisions/0007-remove-legacy-role.md
  1. Treat a nonzero exit as a failed gate. Restore compatibility (keep the old field, make the new one optional, add a new version). If the break is intended, ask the Architect for a decision record. The AI may draft it, but only a person signs it.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

contract-compat is a skill published in the GitHub repository ALTEN-group/coding-pal (5 stars, last pushed 5d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 78 tokens to every session and 635 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-14.
