dependency-guard

dependency-guard is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ALTEN-group/coding-pal. It costs 34 tokens per session (358 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A dependency-checking tool that compares package changes with the Git version of a project. It can identify new packages that were not requested or that the project bans.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after changes to package.json, with optional lists of packages that a user has explicitly approved.
Why use it?
It prevents coding agents from adding unnecessary, outdated, or prohibited libraries and increasing maintenance and security risk.

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00034 $0.00358
Opus 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00143
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00072
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

dependency-guard scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 24d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/dependency-guard.mjs, scripts/dependency-guard.test.mjs), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Dependency Guard

Blast-radius control for project dependencies, preventing unapproved package bloat and banned libraries.

When to Use This Skill

  • An AI agent edits package.json to install or modify dependencies.
  • A project enforces a zero-new-dependencies policy unless explicitly requested by the user.
  • A team wants to enforce bans on bloated or deprecated libraries (moment, request).

Path resolution

Resolve references/ and scripts/ relative to this skill's install directory (e.g. .agents/skills/dependency-guard/ or .claude/skills/dependency-guard/).

Workflow

  1. Read references/dependency-contract.md to review allowed vs. banned criteria.
  2. Run the dependency guard against git changes:
# Check git working tree changes against HEAD
node scripts/dependency-guard.mjs --git

# Allow specific user-authorized new packages
node scripts/dependency-guard.mjs --git --allow "zod,dotenv"

# Run with JSON output for automated agent ingestion
node scripts/dependency-guard.mjs --git --json
  1. If the guard detects unauthorized packages:
    • Remove the package from package.json.
    • Implement the feature using native language runtime utilities or existing packages.
    • Re-run until the command exits with code 0.

Done When

  • scripts/dependency-guard.mjs exits with code 0.
  • Zero unauthorized or banned packages are introduced.
Files

What ships with it

3 files beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
