mssql-to-snowflake-dbt-migration

mssql-to-snowflake-dbt-migration is a skill for Claude Code from AltimateAI/data-engineering-skills. It costs 240 tokens per session (6,680 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow for converting Microsoft SQL Server code, such as stored procedures and views, into dbt models that run in Snowflake. It builds the converted models in an isolated schema and compares their results with the originals.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to migrate T-SQL code to Snowflake, deploy it safely for checking, verify data parity, and track migration progress.
Why use it?
It addresses the differences between SQL Server and Snowflake while checking that the migration preserves results. The isolated deployment reduces the risk of changing production data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00240 $0.06680
Opus 5.5 $0.00096 $0.02672
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00048 $0.01336
Haiku 4.5 $0.00024 $0.00668

Security

Grade A, and why

mssql-to-snowflake-dbt-migration scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 7 executable files (scripts/deploy_isolated.sh, scripts/init_run.sh, scripts/isolation_check.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Pick architecture → inventory source → convert → confirm → build to isolated schema → parity → verify → dashboard.

When NOT to use this skill

  • Source is PostgreSQL / MySQL / Oracle / BigQuery (not T-SQL) → migrating-sql-to-dbt.
  • Target is not Snowflake → migrating-sql-to-dbt + the appropriate warehouse skills.
  • Just one T-SQL snippet with no isolated-deploy or parity requirement → migrating-sql-to-dbt.
  • Enhancing an existing dbt model → dbt-model-enhancement.

Prerequisites

command -v altimate-code # strongly preferred — carries MS SQL + Snowflake adapters and data-parity
command -v dbt # required for the deploy phase
command -v git # required

Must have:

  • A dbt project configured for Snowflake (dbt_project.yml + a working profiles.yml or env-var profile).
  • A Snowflake role with CREATE SCHEMA on the target database and USAGE on a warehouse. The skill writes to an isolated schema, not prod.
  • A dedicated migration target in profiles.yml with a schema: override (see Phase 5 Method 1). The skill refuses to deploy without it — the --vars '{target_schema: ...}' trick is a no-op on standard projects.
  • dbt_utils package installed (packages.yml + dbt deps) — the rewrite table recommends dbt_utils.generate_surrogate_key as the NULL-safe way to port T-SQL IDENTITY columns. If dbt_utils isn't installed, add it before Phase 2 or avoid the IDENTITY mapping.
  • Source access via one of:
    • altimate-code configured with an MS SQL connection (altimate-code providers), OR
    • A directory of .sql dumps already in the repo.
  • For parity: source rows must be readable from Snowflake — either replicated (Fivetran/Airbyte/pre-existing bronze), or landable via stage + COPY INTO. Phase 6 hard-stops if neither is true.

If altimate-code is unavailable AND no dump exists, stop and tell the user.

If dbt is not installed, Phase 5 cannot run — stop and tell the user.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

mssql-to-snowflake-dbt-migration is a skill published in the GitHub repository AltimateAI/data-engineering-skills (130 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 240 tokens to every session and 6,680 once invoked, about $0.0010 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-28.
