debugging-hermes-tui-commands

debugging-hermes-tui-commands is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from AmineDjeghri/personal-os-setup. It costs 23 tokens per session (1,281 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A troubleshooting guide for Hermes terminal interface slash commands across their Python backend, connection layer, and TypeScript user interface.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to diagnose and update slash-command registration, autocomplete, command dispatch, configuration changes, and terminal-interface behavior.
Why use it?
It helps find mismatches when a command appears in one part of Hermes but is missing, does not work, or does not update the interface elsewhere.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00023 $0.01281
Opus 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00512
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00256
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00128

Security

Grade A, and why

debugging-hermes-tui-commands scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Debugging Hermes TUI Slash Commands

Overview

Hermes slash commands span three layers — Python command registry, tui_gateway JSON-RPC bridge, and the Ink/TypeScript frontend. When a command misbehaves (missing from autocomplete, works in CLI but not TUI, config persists but UI doesn't update), one layer is out of sync with another. Use for any slash command that half-works, needs adding to backend + frontend, or behaves differently in CLI vs TUI.

Architecture Overview

Python backend (hermes_cli/commands.py)     <- canonical COMMAND_REGISTRY
       │
       ▼
TUI gateway (tui_gateway/server.py)         <- slash.exec / command.dispatch
       │
       ▼
TUI frontend (ui-tui/src/app/slash/) <- local handlers + fallthrough

Command definitions must be registered consistently across Python and TypeScript to work properly. The Python COMMAND_REGISTRY is the source of truth for: CLI dispatch, gateway help, Telegram BotCommand menu, Slack subcommand map, and autocomplete data shipped to Ink.

Investigation Steps

  1. TUI frontend: search for /commandname under ui-tui/ (*.ts, *.tsx).
  2. TUI command definitions: ui-tui/src/app/slash/commands/core.ts.
  3. Python backend: hermes_cli/commands.py (COMMAND_REGISTRY, CommandDef).
  4. Gateway: tui_gateway/server.py (slash.exec / complete.slash).

Fix: Missing Command Autocomplete

If a command exists in the TUI but doesn't show in autocomplete:

  1. Add a CommandDef entry to COMMAND_REGISTRY in hermes_cli/commands.py:

    CommandDef("commandname", "Description of the command", "Session",
               cli_only=True, aliases=("alias",),
               args_hint="[arg1|arg2|arg3]",
               subcommands=("arg1", "arg2", "arg3")),

  2. Pick cli_only vs gateway availability carefully:

    • cli_only=True — only in the interactive CLI/TUI
    • gateway_only=True — only in messaging platforms
    • neither — available everywhere
    • gateway_config_gate="display.foo" — config-gated availability in the gateway

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

debugging-hermes-tui-commands is a skill published in the GitHub repository AmineDjeghri/personal-os-setup (659 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 23 tokens to every session and 1,281 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-19.
