better-auth-email-password-and-sessions

better-auth-email-password-and-sessions is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from andrewsrigom/agent-skills. It costs 56 tokens per session (718 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for adding email-and-password sign-in and managing login sessions with Better Auth, a user-authentication library. It covers registration, login, password resets, cookies, session expiry, refreshing, caching, and invalidation.

In plain words
What is it for?
For implementing password-based accounts, sign-in and registration flows, password resets, cookie-backed sessions, session expiry, refresh behavior, and session invalidation.
Why use it?
It helps choose session settings deliberately and handle the security trade-offs between speed, revocation, and different storage approaches.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00056 $0.00718
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00359
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00144
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00072

Security

Grade A, and why

better-auth-email-password-and-sessions scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Better Auth Email Password And Sessions

Use this skill when the app relies on Better Auth's built-in account auth and session model.

Scope

  • enabling emailAndPassword
  • sign-up and sign-in flows
  • password reset boundaries
  • auto sign-in behavior after registration
  • session expiration and refresh policy
  • cookie cache strategy and revocation tradeoffs
  • stateless or secondary-storage session design

Default path

  1. Enable emailAndPassword only if the product actually needs password auth.
  2. Decide whether sign-up should auto sign in or require a separate step.
  3. Use client methods for browser-side auth actions and auth.api only on the server.
  4. Set session expiration and updateAge intentionally instead of accepting defaults blindly.
  5. Choose whether cookie cache should be enabled based on revocation sensitivity and performance needs.
  6. If using secondary storage or stateless mode, define how session invalidation will work before rollout.

When to deviate

  • Skip password auth entirely when the product only needs social or enterprise identity.
  • Keep cookie cache off when immediate revocation matters more than read performance.
  • Use stateless or secondary-storage sessions only when the deployment model or scale constraints justify the extra invalidation complexity.
  • Move to the social or Next.js skills when those surfaces, not session policy, become the dominant concern.

Guardrails

  • Do not call Better Auth client methods from the server.
  • Do not enable cookie cache without understanding the delayed-revocation tradeoff.
  • Keep password reset and secret-token flows server-controlled.
  • Use secure cookie defaults and short cache windows for sensitive applications.
  • If immediate revocation matters, prefer database-backed validation or a shorter cookie-cache lifetime.

Avoid

  • enabling password auth by default without product need
  • mixing browser client calls with server-only auth APIs
  • turning on cookie cache just for speed without handling revocation risk
  • choosing stateless sessions before deciding how revocation and invalidation will work

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
