shadcn-cli-registry-and-components-json

shadcn-cli-registry-and-components-json is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from andrewsrigom/agent-skills. It costs 62 tokens per session (776 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Guidance for setting up and maintaining shadcn, a toolkit that adds reusable UI component code to a project. It covers the project configuration file, the command-line tool, component registries, aliases, and updates.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when initializing shadcn, configuring components.json, adding components or blocks, setting import aliases, or deciding how local and remote registries should work.
Why use it?
It reduces setup mistakes and clarifies which generated component code belongs to the local project. It also helps avoid updates overwriting local changes unexpectedly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00062 $0.00776
Opus 5 $0.00031 $0.00388
Sonnet 5 $0.00012 $0.00155
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00078

Security

Grade A, and why

shadcn-cli-registry-and-components-json scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

shadcn CLI Registry And components.json

Use this skill when the task is about shadcn CLI setup, registry usage, or components.json ownership.

Scope

  • shadcn init
  • components.json structure and stability
  • registry add flows
  • local and remote registry boundaries
  • update posture for copied component code

Routing cues

  • init shadcn, configure components.json, shadcn add, aliases, style selection, CSS entrypoint, registries, monorepo setup, or update strategy -> use this skill
  • if the work is really about tokens, theme CSS, or dark mode -> use shadcn-theming-tokens-and-dark-mode
  • if the work is really about local component composition and asChild patterns -> use shadcn-composition-and-trigger-patterns

Default path

  1. Initialize shadcn once through the CLI and commit components.json.
  2. Keep aliases and CSS entrypoints accurate before adding more components.
  3. Treat the chosen style and base configuration as stable project-level decisions.
  4. Add components from the official registry one at a time as real product needs appear.
  5. Prefer local code edits after generation rather than expecting repeatable upstream overwrites to preserve your intent.
  6. Introduce custom registries only when you truly have reusable internal UI assets worth distributing.

When to deviate

  • Use a custom registry only when you already have reusable internal patterns that should be shared across repos.
  • Re-run generated updates selectively when upstream fixes are valuable and the local diff is understood.
  • Use a monorepo-aware alias layout only when the codebase structure actually needs it.

Guardrails

  • components.json is a repo contract, not a throwaway scaffold file.
  • Keep path aliases and CSS entrypoints correct before any bulk add flow.
  • Add components intentionally; do not mass-import the registry.
  • Treat generated files as owned code after creation.
  • Prefer one registry strategy per repo instead of mixing ad hoc sources.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
