shadcn-theming-tokens-and-dark-mode

shadcn-theming-tokens-and-dark-mode is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from andrewsrigom/agent-skills. It costs 65 tokens per session (669 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Guidance for setting consistent colors and appearance across a shadcn/ui application using shared CSS variables, including light and dark modes. It explains semantic tokens, such as names for backgrounds, borders, and primary actions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when defining a design system, setting up dark mode, choosing an OKLCH color palette, or keeping shadcn/ui components visually consistent.
Why use it?
It prevents each component from gaining unrelated color choices and makes application-wide visual changes easier to manage.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00065 $0.00669
Opus 5 $0.00032 $0.00334
Sonnet 5 $0.00013 $0.00134
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00067

Security

Grade A, and why

shadcn-theming-tokens-and-dark-mode scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

shadcn Theming Tokens And Dark Mode

Use this skill when the task is mainly about visual defaults, token strategy, or dark-mode behavior in a shadcn app.

Scope

  • theme tokens
  • CSS variables mode
  • semantic color mapping
  • dark mode strategy
  • keeping component-level styling overrides under control

Routing cues

  • shadcn theming, :root, CSS variables, OKLCH colors, semantic tokens, dark mode, theme provider, next-themes, or visual consistency across components -> use this skill
  • if the work is mainly about CLI init or components.json -> use shadcn-cli-registry-and-components-json
  • if the work is mainly about component composition and trigger behavior -> use shadcn-composition-and-trigger-patterns

Default path

  1. Use CSS variables mode for app-wide theming.
  2. Define semantic tokens first: background, foreground, card, popover, primary, secondary, muted, accent, border, input, ring, and chart or sidebar tokens if the app needs them.
  3. Keep brand decisions in token values, not repeated utility overrides inside every component.
  4. Use one dark-mode strategy for the whole app and wire it early.
  5. Let components consume tokens through their default class contracts before adding custom variants.

When to deviate

  • Use hardcoded per-component utility styling only when the component is intentionally one-off.
  • Add extra token families only when a repeated product surface truly needs them.
  • Skip dark mode only when the product has a deliberate single-theme stance.

Guardrails

  • tokens should describe semantics, not page-specific hacks
  • brand color changes belong in variables, not in mass component edits
  • dark mode should be an application decision, not a component-by-component experiment
  • keep contrast and readability intact when shifting tokens

Avoid

  • styling every shadcn component with ad hoc utility overrides instead of fixing the token layer
  • creating token names that encode one page or one feature
  • adding several parallel dark-mode patterns in the same app
  • using theme state to solve layout or composition problems

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
