mcp-server-building

mcp-server-building is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from androoAGI/starnet. It costs 44 tokens per session (2,311 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A development guide for building an MCP server, a connector that lets an AI agent use an outside service through defined tools. It covers researching, building, testing, and proving the connector with realistic questions in TypeScript or Python.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to plan and build MCP servers for external APIs or services, choose TypeScript or Python, check required runtimes, install approved project dependencies, and test real-world agent tasks.
Why use it?
Connecting an agent to an external service requires more than wrapping its API endpoints. This guide provides a staged process for checking the toolchain, handling packages and keys, and testing the resulting tools.

About the project

StarNet is a local-first desktop harness for creating AI agents and arranging them in a pixel-art space station whose layout represents their capabilities, permissions, and workflow. It lets people run real model calls and tools through multiple bounded agents, using their own provider keys or accounts and optionally messaging the station through chat services. The catalogue entries are skills that extend or support work performed by StarNet agents.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00044 $0.02311
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00924
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00462
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00231

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-server-building scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

MCP Server Development Guide

Overview

Create MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers that let AI models work with external services through well-designed tools. The quality of an MCP server is measured by how well it enables a model to accomplish real-world tasks, not by how many endpoints it wraps.

Use this when the Commander wants to integrate an external API or service as an MCP server, in TypeScript (MCP SDK) or Python (FastMCP).

Before you start

  1. Check the toolchain with shell.exec before relying on it:
    • TypeScript: node --version (18 or newer) and npm --version.
    • Python: python --version (3.10 or newer) and pip --version. If the one you need is missing, stop and tell the Commander to install it from its official site (nodejs.org or python.org). Do not try to install a language runtime yourself.
  2. Say what will be installed. Building the server installs packages into the project folder (the official MCP SDK, a schema library, an HTTP client). Name them and get the Commander's go-ahead before the first npm install or pip install. For Python, install into a virtual environment inside the project, not system-wide.
  3. Keys stay out of sight. The server reads the service's key from an environment variable that the Commander sets. Never write a key into code, a committed file, a command, or chat.
  4. Work in a project folder in your workspace or one the Commander trusted, and write files with fs.write and fs.edit.

Process

Building a high-quality MCP server has four phases.

Phase 1: Deep research and planning

1.1 Understand modern MCP design

API coverage and workflow tools. Balance comprehensive coverage of the API's endpoints with specialized workflow tools. Workflow tools are more convenient for specific tasks; comprehensive coverage lets an agent compose operations freely. Which works better varies by client: some benefit from code execution that combines basic tools, others from higher-level workflows. When uncertain, prioritize comprehensive API coverage.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
