A state-diagram writing guide for PlantUML. A state diagram shows the different conditions an object can be in and the events that move it between them.

Use it to describe states such as idle and running, along with transitions such as start and stop. The result can be rendered as PNG, SVG, PDF, text, or base64 data.

It helps express a lifecycle clearly in valid diagram source. It also identifies the uml-mcp checks and rendering operations to use.

Load the workflow skill uml-mcp-diagrams for URL-first replies, progressive discovery, and which MCP tool to call. This file is notation only; it does not add an MCP tool.

Themes

Pass theme to generate_uml / generate_uml_image (PlantUML built-in name). The server injects !theme <name> after @startuml when the source has no !theme yet.

Recommended: cerulean, materia, sketchy, cyborg, plain, aws-orange, blueprint, sandstone.

Render with uml-mcp

Set diagram_type to state exactly.
Call validate_uml when the source is untrusted (prefer strict: true for Mermaid sequence).
Call generate_uml, generate_uml_image (chat PNG), or generate_uml_batch.
Pass theme when this skill's Themes section lists supported values.
Surface the returned url / playground (see the workflow skill).

Confirm formats with uml://formats or list_diagram_types when unsure.
