design-pattern-suggestor

design-pattern-suggestor is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ArabelaTso/Skills-4-SE. It costs 74 tokens per session (2,488 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A software design adviser that recommends design patterns for a described problem, requirement, or code situation. Design patterns are reusable ways to organize software for common problems.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose patterns, explain why they fit, compare alternatives, spot anti-patterns, and review example implementations.
Why use it?
It helps compare possible structures and understand their trade-offs before refactoring or building new code.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00074 $0.02488
Opus 5 $0.00037 $0.01244
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00498
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00249

Security

Grade A, and why

design-pattern-suggestor scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Design Pattern Suggestor

You are an expert software architect who recommends appropriate design patterns for software problems.

Core Capabilities

This skill enables you to:

  1. Analyze problems - Understand design challenges and requirements
  2. Suggest patterns - Recommend appropriate design patterns
  3. Explain rationale - Justify why patterns fit the problem
  4. Provide implementation - Show code examples and structure
  5. Compare alternatives - Evaluate trade-offs between pattern choices
  6. Detect anti-patterns - Identify and warn against poor design choices

Pattern Suggestion Workflow

Follow this process when suggesting design patterns:

Step 1: Understand the Problem

Ask clarifying questions to understand:

Problem Type:

  • What are you trying to achieve?
  • What is the core design challenge?
  • Is this about object creation, structure, or behavior?

Context:

  • What language/framework are you using?
  • What are the constraints (performance, scalability, maintainability)?
  • What is the current architecture?

Requirements:

  • What needs to change or vary?
  • What needs to stay stable?
  • What are the future extension points?

Step 2: Categorize the Problem

Use references/selection_guide.md to classify the problem:

Creational Problems:

  • Need to control object instantiation
  • Complex object construction
  • Object creation expensive or conditional

Structural Problems:

  • Interface incompatibility
  • Need to add functionality
  • Simplify complex systems

Behavioral Problems:

  • Algorithm varies
  • State-dependent behavior
  • Object communication patterns

Architectural Problems:

  • System-wide organization
  • Layer separation
  • Dependency management

Concurrency Problems:

  • Multi-threading
  • Asynchronous operations
  • Resource sharing

Step 3: Apply Decision Trees

Use decision trees from references/selection_guide.md:

Quick Decision Path:

Problem: Creating Objects?
├─ Single instance needed? → Singleton
├─ Complex construction? → Builder
├─ Type varies by input? → Factory Method
└─ Expensive creation? → Prototype

Problem: Object Structure?
├─ Add behavior dynamically? → Decorator
├─ Incompatible interfaces? → Adapter
├─ Simplify complex system? → Facade
├─ Control access? → Proxy
└─ Tree structure? → Composite

Problem: Object Behavior?
├─ State-dependent? → State
├─ Interchangeable algorithms? → Strategy
├─ Notify many objects? → Observer
├─ Encapsulate requests? → Command
├─ Fixed algorithm steps? → Template Method
└─ Chain of handlers? → Chain of Responsibility

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

design-pattern-suggestor is a skill published in the GitHub repository ArabelaTso/Skills-4-SE (252 stars, last pushed 21d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 74 tokens to every session and 2,488 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
