claude-forge: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/wire-otel-prom-grafana/SKILL.md

wire-otel-prom-grafana is a skill for Claude Code from arunanksharan/claude-forge. It costs 82 tokens per session (547 once invoked), scanned A, original, Unlicense.

A setup guide for adding application monitoring with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Tempo, and Loki. OpenTelemetry collects application signals, while these tools store or display metrics, traces, logs, dashboards, and alerts.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add monitoring to Python or Node applications, configure an observability stack, create business metrics, provision Grafana dashboards, and send alerts to Slack or PagerDuty.
Why use it?
It gives developers a documented way to connect application instrumentation with monitoring services. This reduces the work of configuring collection pipelines, dashboards, and alert delivery.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00082 $0.00547
Opus 5.5 $0.00033 $0.00219
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00109
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00055

Measured 2mo ago against content hash a6208ec27eaa, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

wire-otel-prom-grafana scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Wire OpenTelemetry + Prometheus + Grafana + Tempo + Loki (claudeforge)

Follow observability/02-prometheus-grafana.md (or 01-signoz-opentelemetry.md if user prefers SigNoz). Steps:

  1. Confirm with user:
    • Stack: SigNoz (all-in-one) or PG+T+L (modular)?
    • Self-hosted or hosted (Grafana Cloud)?
    • Existing infrastructure?
  2. Set up the observability stack (if self-hosted):
    • Use the docker-compose.observability.yml from 02-prometheus-grafana.md as the starting point
    • Configure Prometheus, Tempo, Loki, OTel Collector, Grafana with provisioning
  3. Instrument the app:
    • Python (FastAPI): opentelemetry-distro + auto-instrument: opentelemetry-bootstrap -a install + setup_telemetry() in app startup
    • Node: @opentelemetry/sdk-node + auto-instrumentations-node, import './telemetry' first in main.ts
    • Add custom metrics for business KPIs (orders, signups, etc.)
  4. Configure Grafana:
    • Provision data sources (Prom, Tempo, Loki) via files in grafana/provisioning/datasources/
    • Provision starter dashboards (Node Exporter Full, framework-specific dashboards from grafana.com)
    • Set up alert rules in Prometheus + Alertmanager → Slack/PagerDuty
  5. Verify:
    • App's /metrics endpoint reachable from Prometheus
    • Traces appear in Tempo via Grafana's Explore tab
    • Logs in Loki searchable by service
    • One end-to-end trace: HTTP request → DB query span → linked log
  6. Set SLOs: define error rate < 1%, p99 latency < 500ms etc. as recording rules + alerts.

Don't put high-cardinality labels (user_id, request_id) on metrics — explodes Prometheus. Use trace attributes for that.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
