better-auth

better-auth is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ashish7802/awesome-api-skills. It costs 0 tokens per session (510 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to Better Auth, a login and account system that works with several web frameworks and database tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add email login, GitHub or Google sign-in, magic links, and optional app-based two-factor authentication to web applications.
Why use it?
It covers sessions, secure cookies, protection against forged requests, account conflicts, and trusted website settings that are easy to misconfigure.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00510
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00255
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00102
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00051

Security

Grade A, and why

better-auth scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 4 executable files (examples/basic.py, examples/middleware.ts, examples/setup.ts, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Better Auth API Skill

Quick Start

Better Auth provides framework-agnostic auth (Next.js, Express, SvelteKit) deeply integrated with modern ORMs like Drizzle and Prisma.

npm install better-auth

Common Workflows

OAuth and Magic Links

Configure plugins to enable OAuth (GitHub, Google) or Magic Links. Better Auth natively handles session creation and saves profiles to your database using the provided database adapter.

Production Patterns

Two-Factor Authentication

Utilize the twoFactor plugin to require TOTP before issuing a valid session cookie. Ensure you construct your UI to gracefully handle the requires_two_factor response state.

Error Recovery

Handle BetterAuthError. When creating users, handle conflicts gracefully (e.g., Email already exists) and prompt the user to log in instead.

Security Notes

Better Auth handles CSRF and secure cookies out of the box. Ensure your trustedOrigins configuration accurately reflects your production domains to prevent session hijacking.

Performance Considerations

Session validation happens on the Edge or Server. Optimize your database queries (e.g., adding indexes to the session_token column) to ensure ultra-fast session lookups on every request.

Testing Guidance

Better Auth can be mocked easily by overriding the getSession function in your unit tests, or by provisioning a test database specifically for your test runner.

Troubleshooting

If sessions randomly invalidate, ensure you are not clearing cookies improperly across subdomains and that the secret configuration variable remains static across deployments.

Why use this skill

Use this when your agent works with better-auth — structured patterns beat pasted docs and prevent common hallucinations.

AI pitfalls

  • Using outdated SDK or API versions from training data
  • Inventing environment variable names
  • Omitting error handling and retry logic

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
