bullmq

bullmq is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ashish7802/awesome-api-skills. It costs 0 tokens per session (642 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to BullMQ, a Node.js task-queue library that stores queued work in Redis, an in-memory data store. It covers queue setup, related technologies, and production patterns such as separate processes for heavy jobs.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to queue jobs, run workers, process CPU-heavy tasks in child processes, and plan Redis settings and related integrations.
Why use it?
It helps move background work out of an API's main process and manage tasks when workers are busy or temporarily unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00000 $0.00642
Opus 5 $0.00000 $0.00321
Sonnet 5 $0.00000 $0.00128
Haiku 4.5 $0.00000 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

bullmq scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (examples/queue.ts), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Quick Start

BullMQ leverages Redis Lua scripts to provide an incredibly fast, transactional task queue natively in TypeScript.

npm install bullmq ioredis

Production Patterns

Sandboxed Processors

For CPU-intensive tasks (image resizing, PDF generation), use BullMQ Sandboxed Processors. This forces the worker to execute in a separate Node.js child process, preventing the heavy task from blocking your API's main event loop.

Architecture & Scaling

Redis MaxMemory

BullMQ queues can grow infinitely if consumers crash. Ensure your Redis instance is configured with a strict maxmemory limit and an eviction policy like noeviction (which causes BullMQ to gracefully pause adding jobs) to prevent OOM crashes.

Error Recovery

Configure automatic retries with exponential backoff on your jobs (attempts: 3, backoff: { type: 'exponential', delay: 1000 }) to handle transient third-party API failures gracefully.

Security Notes

Because BullMQ stores task payloads in Redis, never pass raw sensitive data (credit cards, unhashed passwords) in the job.data object. Pass a database ID and fetch the sensitive data securely within the worker.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

bullmq is a skill published in the GitHub repository ashish7802/awesome-api-skills (13 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It costs nothing until one of its globs matches a file; then it loads 642 tokens. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
