github-pr-workflow

A guide for the full GitHub pull-request process, from creating a branch through review and merging. GitHub pull requests are proposals for adding tested code changes to a shared repository.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create branches, push changes, open and inspect pull requests, handle reviews, and complete the merge workflow.
Why use it?
It gives the work a consistent sequence and supports both GitHub's command-line tool and a Git-plus-API fallback.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00025 $0.02760
Opus 5 $0.00013 $0.01380
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00552
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00276

Security

Grade B, and why

github-pr-workflow scanned grade B with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Sends data to an external URLmediumData exfiltration

A POST to an outside endpoint may be telemetry or may be exfiltration; either way the mod talks to somewhere, and you should know where.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 377 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

GitHub Pull Request Workflow

Complete guide for managing the PR lifecycle. Each section shows the gh way first, then the git + curl fallback for machines without gh.

Prerequisites

  • Authenticated with GitHub (see github-auth skill)
  • Inside a git repository with a GitHub remote

Quick Auth Detection

# Determine which method to use throughout this workflow
if command -v gh &>/dev/null && gh auth status &>/dev/null; then
 AUTH="gh"
else
  AUTH="git"
  if [ -z "${GITHUB_TOKEN:-}" ]; then
    echo "GITHUB_TOKEN is not set; use gh auth login or an approved secure environment setup."
  fi
fi
echo "Using: $AUTH"

Extracting Owner/Repo from the Git Remote

Many curl commands need owner/repo. Extract it from the git remote:

# Works for both HTTPS and SSH remote URLs
REMOTE_URL=$(git remote get-url origin)
OWNER_REPO=$(echo "$REMOTE_URL" | sed -E 's|.*github\.com[:/]||; s|\.git$||')
OWNER=$(echo "$OWNER_REPO" | cut -d/ -f1)
REPO=$(echo "$OWNER_REPO" | cut -d/ -f2)
echo "Owner: $OWNER, Repo: $REPO"

1. Branch Creation

This part is pure git — identical either way:

# Make sure you're up to date
git fetch origin
git checkout main && git pull origin main

# Create and switch to a new branch
git checkout -b feat/add-user-authentication

Branch naming conventions:

  • feat/description — new features
  • fix/description — bug fixes
  • refactor/description — code restructuring
  • docs/description — documentation
  • ci/description — CI/CD changes

2. Making Commits

Use the agent's file tools (write_file, patch) to make changes, then commit:

# Stage specific files
git add src/auth.py src/models/user.py tests/test_auth.py

# Commit with a conventional commit message
git commit -m "feat: add JWT-based user authentication

- Add login/register endpoints
- Add User model with password hashing
- Add auth middleware for protected routes
- Add unit tests for auth flow"

Commit message format (Conventional Commits):

type(scope): short description

Longer explanation if needed. Wrap at 72 characters.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

github-pr-workflow is a skill published in the GitHub repository AtlasOmnia/donna-starter (102 stars, last pushed 3d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 25 tokens to every session and 2,760 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 2 findings (sends data to an external url, makes network calls). It is 81% identical to github-pr-workflow, differing in 137 lines, and is treated as a copy.
