daily-news-digests is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from AtlasOmnia/hermes-custom-pack. It costs 35 tokens per session (1,201 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of daily-news-digests, MIT.

A workflow for building recurring local digests from public sources such as news sites, social networks, code repositories, forums, and release notes. It saves dated Markdown files and can run on a schedule.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to monitor topics across X/Twitter, GitHub, Reddit, Hacker News, RSS feeds, forums, and software release notes. It helps create scheduled research or news summaries in Markdown.
Why use it?
It removes the need to repeatedly check many sources and assemble updates by hand. It also provides a tested collector and a latest copy for quick reading.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00035 $0.01201
Opus 5 $0.00017 $0.00600
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00240
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00120

Security

Grade A, and why

daily-news-digests scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Daily News Digests

Use this skill when the user asks for a recurring local news/research monitor that pulls fresh items from X/Twitter, GitHub, Reddit, Hacker News, RSS, release notes, forums, or other public sources and saves a Markdown digest locally.

The deliverable is a working collector plus verified scheduling, not a suggestion list.

Default outcome

Create:

  1. A deterministic script under ~/scripts/ or an explicitly requested project folder.
  2. A dated Markdown output directory under the relevant vault area.
  3. A latest.md copy for quick viewing.
  4. A scheduler:
  • macOS local/background: launchd LaunchAgent.
  • Hermes/gateway-delivered work: Hermes cron only when delivery or LLM reasoning is needed.
  1. A verified test run with real output, logs, and exit status.

Source selection pattern

Prefer primary or near-primary feeds before broad web search:

  1. Official GitHub repo:
  • releases
  • issues
  • pull requests
  • commits
  • GitHub search
  • Atom feeds for releases/commits
  1. Official docs/blog/release notes RSS or sitemap if available.
  2. X/Twitter via xurl when installed and authenticated.
  3. Reddit public JSON search for relevant subreddits and global mentions.
  4. Hacker News Algolia search.
  5. Other forums/community sources only if the topic warrants it.

For X/Twitter, do not read or print ~/.xurl. Check only xurl auth status; if auth is unavailable, make the script skip X cleanly and explain how the user can enable it outside the agent session.

Implementation steps

  1. Decide output path based on domain ownership.
  • Assistant/system monitoring: ~/Notes/<Topic>/
  • Personal: ~/Notes/...
  • Work/finance/safety domains: delegate or ask the owning profile if needed.
  1. Write a standalone script with:
  • Configurable window, e.g. HERMES_NEWS_DAYS.
  • Configurable output directory, e.g. HERMES_NEWS_DIR.
  • Configurable max items per source.
  • Per-source exception handling so one failing source does not kill the digest.
  • Deduplication by canonical URL.
  • Markdown grouped by source.
  • A clear note that collection is not verification.
  1. Run syntax validation:
  • Python: python3 -m py_compile <script>.
  1. Run the script manually and verify:
  • Exit code is 0.
  • Dated Markdown file exists and is non-empty.
  • latest.md exists and is non-empty.
  • Output includes real collected item counts.
  1. Schedule it.
  2. Kickstart/run the scheduled job once and verify scheduler logs.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
