home-ops: Skill for Claude Code

.agents/skills/home-automation/SKILL.md

home-automation is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Aviator-Coding/home-ops. It costs 79 tokens per session (704 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to home-automation services such as Zigbee2MQTT, Home Assistant, Matter Server, and ESPHome. These connect smart-home devices, local networks, and devices built with microcontrollers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing smart-home secrets or configuration, networking and probes, Matter claims, ESPHome builds, or Kubernetes manifests for these services.
Why use it?
It prevents changing Zigbee network identity values that would unpair every device, breaking fixed network addresses, using the wrong backup variable, or starving firmware builds of memory.

This is Aviator-Coding/home-ops's own configuration. It tells Claude Code and Codex how to work on home-ops itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything home-ops configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00079 $0.00704
Opus 5.5 $0.00032 $0.00282
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00141
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00070

Measured 25d ago against content hash 1fb5e1127cb8, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

home-automation scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 25d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 50 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Home automation: Zigbee2MQTT, Home Assistant, matter-server, ESPHome

Tripwires

  1. The Zigbee2MQTT 1Password fields are the network identity. Rotating CONFIG_PAN_ID, CONFIG_EXT_PAN_ID, or CONFIG_NETWORK_KEY re-forms the network and unpairs every device. Encodings are decimal, and array length is not validated. zigbee2mqtt.md
  2. Zigbee2MQTT writes those env vars into configuration.yaml on every start. An empty env var is ignored, which is why a SecretSynced secret with empty fields used to leave the on-disk network alone. A non-empty wrong value is persisted. zigbee2mqtt.md
  3. Home Assistant has a static IP and no MAC pin. A pinned MAC on the macvlan network races the dying pod's veth and the new pod never comes up. IoT devices key on 10.40.0.100. home-assistant.md
  4. matter-server's claim env is KOPIUR_CLAIM. A VOLSYNC_CLAIM default names a variable the overlay no longer sets. Skill kopiur-backups before any backup edit. ESPHome compiles in its own container; do not shrink that memory limit to the idle working set.

Where things live

What Path
Zigbee2MQTT ExternalSecret kubernetes/apps/base/home-automation/zigbee2mqtt/app/externalsecret.yaml
Home Assistant kubernetes/apps/base/home-automation/home-assistant/app/helmrelease.yaml
matter-server kubernetes/apps/base/home-automation/matter-server/
ESPHome kubernetes/apps/base/home-automation/esphome/
MQTT broker those apps use skill databases, EMQX

Procedures

Verify

  • After any Zigbee identity change, the new pod logs Adapter network matches config and zigbee-herdsman started (resumed), and configuration.yaml matches the pre-change file when the values were unchanged. Do not print the key, PAN ID, or extended PAN.
  • Home Assistant readiness is GET /manifest.json on the in-cluster Service port 8123, not the public HTTPRoute. Skill observability for why the public route can answer before the app does.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

home-automation is a skill published in the GitHub repository Aviator-Coding/home-ops (3 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 79 tokens to every session and 704 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-29.
