handoff

A handoff-writing guide for recording the current conversation so another coding agent can continue without rebuilding the context.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to save a focused handoff document for a tangent or unfinished task, following the project's document location when one exists.
Why use it?
It preserves the question, constraints, decisions, and unresolved points when a side task needs to be paused or transferred.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00048 $0.00580
Opus 5 $0.00024 $0.00290
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00116
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00058

Security

Grade A, and why

handoff scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 35 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Write a handoff document summarising the current conversation (or a specific side-topic that surfaced) so a fresh agent can continue the work without re-deriving context.

Where to save it

Check .ab-method/structure/index.yaml first. In an AB Method project, handoffs are a tracked artifact, not throwaway scratch — save to docs/handoffs/[slug].md (the location the index defines). The slug is a short kebab-case summary of the topic, e.g. rate-limit-redis-vs-token-bucket.md.

If the project is not an AB Method project (no .ab-method/), fall back to the temporary directory of the user's OS — do not pollute the workspace.

The spin-off-mid-grill case

The most common trigger here: you are in the middle of a grill-with-docs / grill-me session and a tangent emerges that clearly deserves its own task. Do not derail the current grill. Instead:

  1. Write the tangent up as a handoff under docs/handoffs/.
  2. Capture only the tangent — the question that opened it, the constraints already established, the decisions still open, and why it was deferred.
  3. Tell the user: "Captured <slug> as a handoff — resume it any time with /create-task-from-handoff <slug>." Then continue grilling the original topic.

What the document must contain

  • Goal — what the next session is meant to accomplish (use the passed argument verbatim if given).
  • Context — the minimum a fresh agent needs: what's been decided, what's still open, what was explicitly ruled out and why.
  • Suggested skills — which skills the next agent should invoke (e.g. grill-with-docs, tdd). For a deferred-task spin-off, the suggested next step is /create-task-from-handoff.
  • References — link to existing artifacts (PRDs, plans, ADRs, issues, commits, diffs, the parent task's progress-tracker.md) by path or URL. Do not duplicate their content.

Rules

  • Do not duplicate content already captured elsewhere — reference it by path or URL instead.
  • Redact any sensitive information (API keys, passwords, PII).
  • If the user passed arguments, treat them as a description of what the next session will focus on and tailor the doc accordingly.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

handoff is a skill published in the GitHub repository ayoubben18/ab-method (187 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 48 tokens to every session and 580 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
