A set of command-line helpers for opening file comparisons in Visual Studio Code, a code editor. It covers side-by-side comparisons between files and versions tracked by Git.

Use it to compare two files, inspect changes from earlier commits, review staged changes, or show a user what changed. The files and revisions must exist and differ.

It provides a visual way to review changes instead of comparing text only in a terminal. It also notes the required VS Code command-line setup and common comparison problems.

Requirements

VS Code must be installed with the code CLI available in PATH.

Opening a Diff

Compare two files side by side in VS Code:

code -d <file1> <file2>

Git Diffs in VS Code

Simple Approach (no config needed)

Extract the old version to a temp file, then diff:

git show HEAD~1:path/to/file > /tmp/old && code -d /tmp/old path/to/file

# Compare with specific commit
