forensic-archive-carve

forensic-archive-carve is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from batteryshark/rekit. It costs 77 tokens per session (363 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A static analyzer for ELF files, the executable and shared-library format commonly used on Linux and BSD. It reads headers, sections, libraries, imported functions, search paths, and security protections without loading or executing the file.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect executable architecture, dependencies, RPATH or RUNPATH settings, notable imports, section entropy, and protections such as PIE, NX, and RELRO.
Why use it?
It provides a structured first look at an unknown Linux binary while avoiding the risks of running it. Entropy and imported functions can reveal packing, encryption, networking, or process control.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is bin/rekit run forensic-archive-carve evidence.img ./forensics/archives \.

Good fit Use it to inspect executable architecture, dependencies, RPATH or RUNPATH settings, notable imports, section entropy, and protections such as PIE, NX, and RELRO.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00077 $0.00363
Opus 5 $0.00039 $0.00181
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00073
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

forensic-archive-carve scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/run.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Forensic Archive Carver

Carve archive byte ranges only after their framing has been validated. This is narrower and more evidence-oriented than binwalk-carve: it records exact source offsets and content identities instead of recursively invoking a broad extractor ecosystem.

Workflow

  1. Run disk-image-scan and retain its scan.jsonl.
  2. Carve from that hit set:
bin/rekit run forensic-archive-carve evidence.img ./forensics/archives \
  --hits ./forensics/scan/scan.jsonl

Omit --hits to scan the image directly for classic ZIP EOCD and RAR4 signatures. The output directory must be empty so an earlier recovery cannot be silently mixed with a new run.

  1. Inspect manifest.jsonl. Each record includes start, endExclusive, size, sha256, structural validation details, and duplicateOf when another carved range has identical bytes.
  2. Treat carving and archive extraction as separate evidence steps. Use unpack on a copy or dedicated output directory; retain the original carved bytes and manifest.

Classic ZIP and RAR4 are supported. ZIP64 and RAR5 signatures are reported as unsupported rather than guessed. --max-size and --max-candidates bound reads and output growth.

Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
