js-deobfuscate

js-deobfuscate is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from batteryshark/rekit. It costs 69 tokens per session (795 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A tool that turns hard-to-read JavaScript back into a more understandable form. It can unpack common web bundles and undo techniques that hide strings, expressions, and program flow.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect suspicious scripts, reveal network or process-related behavior, separate bundled modules, and rescan the clearer output.
Why use it?
Obfuscated or minified JavaScript can hide what a program does, making review and security investigation difficult.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00069 $0.00795
Opus 5 $0.00034 $0.00398
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.00159
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00080

Security

Grade A, and why

js-deobfuscate scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/build.sh, scripts/run.mjs), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

JavaScript Deobfuscator

Statically deobfuscate and unpack obfuscated JavaScript using webcrack.

When to use

Reach for this when JavaScript reads as machine-generated noise and you can't tell what it does: _0x-prefixed identifiers, big string arrays with a decoder function, eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){...}) packer output, control-flow flattening, or a single-line minified/webpacked bundle. Deobfuscation often reveals the behaviour the packing was hiding — a network beacon, a child_process spawn, a decode-and-eval.

When a scanner flags obfuscation (XFRM.* atoms), run this skill and then rescan the deobfuscated output.

What it does

  • reverses string-array obfuscation (obfuscator.io style)
  • folds constants and simplifies expressions
  • deflattens control flow
  • unminifies / restores readable structure
  • unpacks webpack/browserify bundles into separate module files

Mostly static Babel AST transforms. The one exception: to recover encoded string arrays (base64/RC4 obfuscation), webcrack must run the obfuscated decoder function — it does so inside an isolated-vm sandbox (no filesystem, no network, memory/time capped), a narrow slice, never the whole program. That sandboxed execution is why webcrack carries a native addon. Still run the node process itself sandboxed: no network, writes only to the output dir, with a timeout.

Usage

# via the dispatcher (checks that node is present first)
rekit run js-deobfuscate ./obfuscated.js ./out

# or directly
node skills/js-deobfuscate/scripts/run.mjs ./obfuscated.js ./out

Writes out/deobfuscated.js (the single-file result) and, for detected bundles, out/unpacked/ (one file per recovered module). Prints a JSON result line:

{"ok": true, "outputFile": "out/deobfuscated.js", "unpackedDir": "out/unpacked",
 "moduleCount": 12, "bytesIn": 48213, "bytesOut": 91044, "changed": true}

Prerequisites

  • node ≥ 18 — the only runtime requirement. Run rekit install js-deobfuscate once to build scripts/node_modules from the lockfile; the skill does not use npm or the network during analysis. isolated-vm ships prebuilt binaries for darwin-arm64/x64, linux-x64/arm64, and win32-x64; an LTS node is safest for ABI match (otherwise isolated-vm falls back to building from source, which needs a C++ toolchain).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

js-deobfuscate is a skill published in the GitHub repository batteryshark/rekit (11 stars, last pushed 26d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 69 tokens to every session and 795 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (runs shell commands). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
