pe-unmap

pe-unmap is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from batteryshark/rekit. It costs 76 tokens per session (653 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A static converter for changing the alignment of Windows PE files, the executable format used by EXE and DLL files. It can convert memory-aligned data to file alignment, or file-aligned data to memory alignment.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to turn a memory dump into a loadable EXE, prepare raw bytes for an analyzer that expects mapped data, or realign a dump before rebuilding its import table. It runs on Windows.
Why use it?
A memory dump does not use the same layout as an executable stored on disk, so it may not load or analyze correctly. This converts the layout without running the program.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00076 $0.00653
Opus 5 $0.00038 $0.00327
Sonnet 5 $0.00015 $0.00131
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00065

Security

Grade A, and why

pe-unmap scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 2 executable files (scripts/build.ps1, scripts/run.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

pe-unmap — PE Alignment Converter

Convert between PE file alignments with hasherezade's pe_unmapper (built on libpeconv). Essential for finishing a memory dump into a loadable EXE — the memory layout (virtual-aligned) differs from the on-disk layout (raw/file-aligned), and loaders expect raw alignment.

Static transform — reads a PE file, writes a converted file, never runs it. Windows-only vendored binary (run on a Windows analysis host).

Modes

--mode Direction Use when
unmap (default) Virtual → Raw You have a memory dump and want a loadable EXE. Auto-detects the base if --base is omitted.
map Raw → Virtual You need the in-memory layout (e.g. to feed an analyzer that expects mapped bytes).
realign Virtual → Raw (Raw == Virtual) Sections are memory-aligned (VirtualAlignment=0x1000) but you need FileAlignment=0x200-consistent output.

Usage

# recover an EXE from a memory dump (the common case)
rekit run pe-unmap dump.mem ./out --mode unmap --base 0x400000

# realign a Scylla/memory dump before IAT rebuild
rekit run pe-unmap raw_dump.exe ./out --mode realign

Result JSON: {ok, mode, input, output, outputSize}.

In the dump-recovery pipeline

This is step 3 of the classic unpack pipeline:

  1. OEP find (skill: a debugger / Frida trace) — stop at the original entry point.
  2. Dump (skill: pyscylla dump, or Scylla) — write the process memory.
  3. Realign ← this skill — convert virtual→raw alignment.
  4. IAT rebuild (skill: pyscylla fix + rebuild) — reconstruct imports.

Pair it with pyscylla for the dump + IAT rebuild steps.

Rebuild from source

The committed bin/pe_unmapper.exe is a Release x64 build. To refresh from upstream:

.\scripts\build.ps1 # needs VS 2022 + CMake; clones --recursive upstream

License: BSD-2-Clause (pe_unmapper + libpeconv, hasherezade) — see bin/LICENSE.pe_unmapper and bin/LICENSE.libpeconv.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
