bauplan-migrate-to-typed-sdk

bauplan-migrate-to-typed-sdk is a skill for Claude Code from BauplanLabs/bauplan-skills. It costs 83 tokens per session (3,392 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A migration guide for updating Bauplan pipeline projects from SDK versions 0.1 or 0.2 to the typed 0.3 SDK. It replaces older declarations with Python type annotations and schema classes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to upgrade Bauplan pipelines, add typed table schemas, update model inputs and outputs, and convert run parameters.
Why use it?
It removes the need to work out the SDK's new format by hand and helps check that the updated pipeline runs correctly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00083 $0.03392
Opus 5.5 $0.00033 $0.01357
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00678
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00339

Security

Grade A, and why

bauplan-migrate-to-typed-sdk scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 25d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Migrating a Bauplan Pipeline to the Typed SDK

Bauplan 0.3.x replaces the old declaration style with type annotations that double as a semantic layer: column projections and output contracts become TableSchema classes, model inputs become Annotated[pa.Table, Model(...)] parameters, and run parameters become Annotated[<type>, Parameter(...)]. This skill takes an existing old-style project, rewrites it to the typed style, and validates the result until the pipeline runs green.

The complete old-to-new pattern catalog with real code is in examples.md. Read it before rewriting any file.

What changes, in one look

Old (0.1.x or 0.2.x) New (0.3.x)
data=bauplan.Model("t", columns=[...], filter=...) data: Annotated[pa.Table, Model("t", projection_schema=SomeSchema, filter=...)]
@bauplan.model(columns=[...]) @bauplan.model() + -> Annotated[pa.Table, OutputSchema]
no schema objects class SomeSchema(TableSchema) with typed fields, optional TableField(name=, doc=, lineage=)
x=bauplan.Parameter("x") x: Annotated[float, Parameter("x")]
return list/pandas/polars/arrow return an actual pa.Table

CRITICAL: Branch Safety

NEVER run pipelines on main branch. Always checkout to a test branch first: bauplan checkout -b <username>.<branch_name> --from-ref main. ALWAYS validate the migrated pipeline on a separate data branch.

Get the username by running bauplan info.

Input

Before starting, you need to find all the Bauplan projects that need migration. A Bauplan project is a folder containing bauplan_project.yml or bauplan_project.yaml.

You can find them using e.g. find . -name 'bauplan_project.yml' -o -name 'bauplan_project.yaml'.

Migration Workflow

Step 1: Inventory

Read every models.py, expectations.py, other *.py model files, *.sql files, and bauplan_project.yml (also accepted as bauplan_project.yaml) in the project. List:

  • every @bauplan.model and @bauplan.expectation function
  • every bauplan.Model(...) input and its columns / filter / other kwargs
  • every bauplan.Parameter(...) and its type: in bauplan_project.yml
  • every columns=[...] on a @bauplan.model() decorator
  • every internet_access=... on a @bauplan.model() decorator
  • every model return statement and what it returns (arrow, polars, pandas, list of dicts)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
