hexagonal-architecture

hexagonal-architecture is a skill for Claude Code from bdfinst/agentic-dev-team. It costs 42 tokens per session (839 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A software design approach that keeps business rules separate from databases, web frameworks, and other outside systems.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when designing services, reviewing project structure, or adding an outside dependency behind a clear interface.
Why use it?
It reduces the risk that changing an external service or framework will spread changes throughout the application.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.00839
Opus 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00336
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00168
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00084

Security

Grade A, and why

hexagonal-architecture scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Hexagonal Architecture (Ports & Adapters)

Overview

Design systems with clear separation between business logic and infrastructure. The domain core has zero dependencies on outer layers; all external interactions flow through explicitly defined ports and adapters.

Core Concepts

Ports

  • Interfaces that express application intent independent of technology
  • Inbound ports (driving): define use cases the application exposes (e.g., CreateOrderUseCase)
  • Outbound ports (driven): define what the application needs from the outside world (e.g., OrderRepository, PaymentGateway)

Adapters

  • Concrete implementations that connect ports to external systems
  • Inbound adapters: REST controllers, CLI handlers, message consumers, GraphQL resolvers
  • Outbound adapters: database repositories, HTTP clients, message publishers, file storage

Dependency Rule

  • All dependencies point inward toward the domain core
  • Domain knows nothing about adapters, frameworks, or infrastructure
  • Adapters depend on ports, never the reverse

    ├── inbound/ # Controllers, CLI, event consumers
└── outbound/ # Repository impls, API clients, message publishers

Steps

1. Identify Boundaries

  • Enumerate all external dependencies (databases, APIs, message brokers, file systems)
  • Identify each as an inbound or outbound interaction
  • Graph-assisted discovery. Prefer CodeGraph/Repowise over raw Grep for locating adapters, port implementations, and cross-layer imports — see knowledge/codegraph-vs-graphify.md for tool selection and the fallback contract.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

hexagonal-architecture is a skill published in the GitHub repository bdfinst/agentic-dev-team (295 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 839 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
