proxy-resilience

proxy-resilience is a skill for Claude Code from bdfinst/agentic-dev-team. It costs 78 tokens per session (952 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A retry procedure for temporary failures when requests pass through a corporate Anthropic proxy. It covers rate limits and refused connections from that proxy.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when proxy requests return HTTP 429 errors or connection-refused errors tied to the proxy host.
Why use it?
It prevents endless retries when the proxy is unavailable or limiting requests. After a fixed number of attempts, it gives the failure an explicit escalation path.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Fable 5.1 $0.00078 $0.00952
Opus 5.5 $0.00031 $0.00381

Security

Grade A, and why

proxy-resilience scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Proxy Resilience

Overview

A corporate proxy fronting Anthropic API traffic enforces its own rate limits and allowlist behavior, independent of the underlying account's tier — a 429 or connection-refused error in a proxy-fronted session is a different failure class than a direct-API rate limit (already retried natively by the harness; do not apply this convention to those).

Covers two related failure modes sharing one root cause (transient corporate-proxy unavailability) and one remedy shape (bounded backoff, a hard retry ceiling, then escalate): rate-limit errors (issue #723, this file) and connection-refused errors (issue #724). Documented together so either failure mode is found in one place.

Detection Signals

Treat an error as proxy rate-limiting when it shows all of:

  1. The session is known to run against a corporate proxy (e.g. the anthropic-proxy operating note, a proxy env var/base URL, or a previously observed proxy hostname in error text).
  2. The error text contains HTTP 429, "rate limit", "too many requests", or "quota exceeded".
  3. The error references the proxy host, not api.anthropic.com directly.

Treat an error as proxy connection-refused (#724) when it shows (1) above plus a connection-level failure (ECONNREFUSED, "connection refused", "could not connect", timeout connecting to the proxy host).

Backoff Schedule

Apply exponential backoff per call site (one place repeatedly issuing the same request — e.g. one subagent retrying one API call, not the whole session): initial delay 1s, ×2 multiplier, 60s cap, max 5 attempts.

Attempt 1 2 3 4 5 (last)
Delay 1s 2s 4s 8s 16s

After 5 retries at the same call site still fail with a proxy rate-limit error, stop retrying and escalate (below) rather than looping further. Five is deliberately far below any plausible recurrence of "28 rate-limit errors in one session" — that scale breaches this ceiling on the first call site alone, well before reaching 28.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

proxy-resilience is a skill published in the GitHub repository bdfinst/agentic-dev-team (295 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 78 tokens to every session and 952 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
