cartographer-kb-import

cartographer-kb-import is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from BeppeTemp/cartographer. It costs 51 tokens per session (2,054 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A procedure for moving an existing knowledge collection, such as an Obsidian vault, Markdown folder, or exported wiki, into a Cartographer knowledge base. It first maps files and links mechanically, then handles duplicates and content decisions in small batches.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect a source collection, map its folders and links, create needed metadata, detect secrets, and incrementally curate the imported content.
Why use it?
It avoids rewriting an entire collection at once, which can lose information or create costly, hard-to-review changes. It also requires approval of the mapping plan before writing.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.02054
Opus 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00822
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00411
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00205

Security

Grade A, and why

cartographer-kb-import scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

KB Import — Skill

Purpose

Guide an agent (with its operator) through importing an external corpus that does not follow Cartographer/OKF patterns — an Obsidian vault, a plain docs folder, an exported wiki — into a Cartographer KB. The core principle (D74, consistent with D28: no server-side ingest tool):

  • Mechanical work is free: layout mapping, frontmatter synthesis and link rewriting go through the cartographer import CLI scaffold — zero LLM tokens, cost proportional to corpus size.
  • Semantic work is agentic and incremental: archive mapping, dedup and content curation are done by the agent, in small batches across sessions, driven by the imported_draft lint finding. Never rewrite a whole wiki in one session.
  • Human checkpoint before any write: the mapping plan is approved by the operator first.

Steps

1. Recon the source (read-only)

Inventory the corpus without modifying it: file count and formats, directory structure, link style ([[wiki]] vs [text](path.md)), presence/shape of existing frontmatter, obvious non-content (assets, templates, daily notes, trash). Produce a short summary for the operator.

Secrets check. Grep the source for credentials/PII (password, token, BEGIN.*KEY, etc.) before anything is written to a KB that will be pushed — git history is forever, so this check comes before any write and stays first. For each finding, decide explicitly between two outcomes and record the choice with the operator:

  1. Exclude the file (or strip the value) from the import — the default for anything that is not a credential the KB needs to resolve;
  2. Move the value into an encrypted file and leave the concept referencing it via secret_refs. The full procedure — age key, root .sops.yaml creation rules, the first encrypted file, the Service concept — is the cartographer-kb-create skill's references/secrets.md. Cartographer performs none of the operator-side steps.

If the corpus carries a .sops.yaml or *.sops.yaml of its own, do not merge it blindly into the target KB's rules: the recipients must be reconciled deliberately, because a wrong merge silently produces files nobody on the team can decrypt.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

cartographer-kb-import is a skill published in the GitHub repository BeppeTemp/cartographer (45 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 2,054 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-23.
