update-mcp

update-mcp is a skill for Claude Code from BerriAI/litellm-skills. It costs 43 tokens per session (341 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An administrative action for changing an MCP server registration on a live LiteLLM proxy. The registration tells the proxy where the server is and which tools or credentials it should use.

In plain words
What is it for?
Updating an MCP server by ID, including its URL, authentication credentials, description, and list of allowed tools.
Why use it?
It avoids manually constructing the update request and supports changing only the server details that need to be rotated or revised.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00043 $0.00341
Opus 5 $0.00022 $0.00170
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00068
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00034

Security

Grade A, and why

update-mcp scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Update MCP Server

Update an existing MCP server registration on a live LiteLLM proxy.

Setup

LITELLM_BASE_URL  — e.g. https://my-proxy.example.com
LITELLM_API_KEY   — proxy admin key

Ask the user

  1. server_id — if they don't have it, list first:
    curl -s "$BASE/v1/mcp/server" -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY"

  2. What to change — any combination of:
    • url
    • credentials (rotate the auth token)
    • description
    • allowed_tools (list of tool names to expose)

Run

curl -s -X PUT "$BASE/v1/mcp/server" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "server_id": "<server_id>",
    "url": "<new_url>",
    "credentials": "<new_token>"
  }'

Only include the fields being changed.

Output

Confirm the server was updated and show the updated fields.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
