update-model

update-model is a skill for Claude Code from BerriAI/litellm-skills. It costs 40 tokens per session (422 once invoked), scanned C, original, MIT.

A tool for changing an existing model entry on a live LiteLLM proxy, which routes requests to language-model services. It can update details such as the API key, endpoint, version, or underlying model.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to rotate an API key, change an API endpoint or Azure API version, switch the underlying model, and optionally test that requests still route correctly.
Why use it?
It avoids manually editing proxy configuration when a model’s credentials or connection details change. It also supports checking the model list first when its ID is unknown.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00040 $0.00422
Opus 5 $0.00020 $0.00211
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00084
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00042

Security

Grade C, and why

update-model scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

Update Model

Update an existing model's configuration on a live LiteLLM proxy.

Setup

LITELLM_BASE_URL  — e.g. https://my-proxy.example.com
LITELLM_API_KEY   — proxy admin key

Ask the user

  1. model_id (required) — if they don't have it, list models first:
    curl -s "$BASE/model/info" -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY" | python3 -c "
    import sys,json
    for m in json.load(sys.stdin).get('data',[]):
      print(m['model_info']['id'], m['model_name'])
    "

  2. What to change — any combination of:
    • api_key (rotate the credential)
    • api_base (change endpoint)
    • api_version (Azure)
    • model (underlying model string, e.g. azure/new-deployment)

Run

curl -s -X POST "$BASE/model/update" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model_info": {"id": "<model_id>"},
    "litellm_params": {
      "api_key": "<new_key>",
      "api_base": "<new_base>"
    }
  }'

Only include litellm_params fields being changed.

Output

Confirm the model was updated. Offer to run a test call to verify it still routes correctly.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

update-model is a skill published in the GitHub repository BerriAI/litellm-skills (84 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 40 tokens to every session and 422 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it C with 2 findings (downloads and executes remote code, makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
