connect-ideas

connect-ideas is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from bettyguo/obsidian_mcp. It costs 22 tokens per session (553 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A vault-review skill that finds two notes with related content but no direct wiki link between them. A vault is a collection of linked notes, and a wiki link is a note-to-note reference.

In plain words
What is it for?
It searches central notes, compares related candidates, checks existing links, reads the strongest pair, and proposes a specific link with an explanation.
Why use it?
It surfaces useful connections that may be easy to miss during normal note taking or review.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00022 $0.00553
Opus 5 $0.00011 $0.00277
Sonnet 5 $0.00004 $0.00111
Haiku 4.5 $0.00002 $0.00055

Security

Grade A, and why

connect-ideas scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 47 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

When to use

The user wants serendipitous structural insight — a pair of notes that share content but no wikilink edge. Useful during a slow-thinking session or as part of a weekly review.

Procedure

  1. Call vault_info.
  2. Call find_hubs(top_k=10) to identify central notes — these are the strongest candidates for a missed connection.
  3. For each hub, call find_related(seed=hub_path, top_k=8). Filter the results: keep only notes that are NOT already wikilinked to the hub (use find_backlinks(hub_path) to determine this).
  4. Score each candidate pair by find_related similarity × log(candidate's wikilink count). High-quality candidates are dense-similar AND not already isolated.
  5. Pick the single highest-scoring pair. If no candidate clears a similarity threshold of 0.55, tell the user "I didn't find a strong enough pair this round" and stop.
  6. Call read_note on both notes. Skim. Identify the specific overlap.
  7. Surface to the user IN CHAT:
    • Note A path + 1-line summary
    • Note B path + 1-line summary
    • Why they should connect (2–3 sentences, pointing at the actual textual overlap)
    • The proposed wikilink insertion: which note gets the link, near which phrase, with what alias if any.
  8. If the user confirms, call link_notes(from_path=..., to_path=..., context_phrase=..., confirm=true).

Output format

Found a pair:
  A: [[Note A]] — {one-line summary}
  B: [[Note B]] — {one-line summary}

Rationale: {2–3 sentences citing the overlap}

Proposed: Insert `[[Note B]]` into [[Note A]] near "{context phrase}".

Anti-patterns

  • Don't propose more than one pair per invocation. Decision fatigue kills the workflow.
  • Don't link two notes that are already 1-hop connected via a third note unless the connection is genuinely value-add. Surface the existing path instead.
  • Don't propose a link that would make Note A's text grammatically nonsensical. Re-read the context phrase before suggesting.
  • Don't insert the link without confirm=True from the user (unless --unattended).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

connect-ideas is a skill published in the GitHub repository bettyguo/obsidian_mcp (8 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 22 tokens to every session and 553 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
