rendering-videos

rendering-videos is a skill for Claude Code from bnayahu/journeycast. It costs 42 tokens per session (524 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for turning captured website assets and narration into a narrated MP4 video. It uses a journey description and a capture manifest, which records the assets collected from the experience, to create the video and subtitle file.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it after capture has succeeded to render a feature walkthrough video and its SRT subtitle file.
Why use it?
It removes the need to set video timings by hand because the timeline follows the measured narration audio. It also defines where temporary files and final deliverables belong.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.00524
Opus 5 $0.00021 $0.00262
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00105
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00052

Security

Grade A, and why

rendering-videos scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Rendering videos

Turn the captured assets into a narrated MP4. All timing derives from measured narration audio — you do not set durations.

Paths follow the Output location convention from deriving-journeys: $OUTDIR = <target-repo>/docs/journeycast/pr-<pr>/ (committed deliverables) and $WORKDIR = out/pr-<pr>/ in the journeycast clone (gitignored scratch). Render into scratch, then place the final MP4 + SRT in the target repo.

Steps

  1. Locate the manifest. Confirm $WORKDIR/capture/capture-manifest.json exists (from the capturing-journeys step). If it is missing, tell the user to run capture first and stop.

  2. Render. Run node engine/render.mjs --journey "$OUTDIR/journey.yaml" --manifest "$WORKDIR/capture/capture-manifest.json" --out "$WORKDIR". This synthesizes narration, derives the timeline from measured audio, renders the Remotion timeline (captions are drawn in-frame with focus-aware placement), and composes the audio track. Intermediate files land in $WORKDIR/.work.

  3. Publish deliverables. Copy the finished $WORKDIR/<feature>.mp4 and $WORKDIR/<feature>.srt into $OUTDIR. <feature> is meta.feature from the journey. Do not copy $WORKDIR/.work or the capture screenshots — only the movie and captions belong in the repo.

  4. Note the narration provider. If stderr contains warning: no TTS provider available, tell the user the video rendered with a silent track and how to enable audio: set JOURNEYCAST_TTS_API_KEY (neural) or JOURNEYCAST_PIPER_MODEL (offline Piper), then re-render.

  5. Report the result. On success, report the published MP4 path ($OUTDIR/<feature>.mp4) and duration, and note the sibling $OUTDIR/<feature>.srt captions file.

Output

<target-repo>/docs/journeycast/pr-<pr>/<feature>.mp4 and <feature>.srt (alongside the journey.yaml).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

rendering-videos is a skill published in the GitHub repository bnayahu/journeycast (2 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 524 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-31.
