better-colors

better-colors is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from boraoztunc/skills. It costs 134 tokens per session (1,881 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide to organising colours in digital products into named roles, applying them consistently, and checking how they appear against backgrounds.

In plain words
What is it for?
It helps build palettes, name colour tokens, support light and dark themes, audit existing code, and check colour contrast.
Why use it?
It helps prevent inconsistent colours and combinations that are hard to distinguish or read.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00134 $0.01881
Opus 5 $0.00067 $0.00941
Sonnet 5 $0.00027 $0.00376
Haiku 4.5 $0.00013 $0.00188

Security

Grade A, and why

better-colors scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Colors

A color system is a small set of ramps, named by role, applied consistently, and verified against the backgrounds they actually render on. Almost every color problem is a system problem: a value picked in isolation, a token borrowed because it looked right, or a pair nobody measured. Contrast requirements belong to better-accessibility; surfaces, shadows, and icon color belong to better-ui.

Quick Reference

Category When to use Reference
Structure Which ramps a system needs, step roles, neutrals, status colors, auditing an existing palette palette-structure.md
Generation Building a ramp from a brand color, multi-hue systems, dark mode palette-generation.md
Naming Primitive and semantic tiers, role inventory, naming grammar, anti-patterns token-naming.md
Usage One meaning per color, emphasis, gradients, culture, appearance variants color-usage.md
Contrast APCA and WCAG checks, reporting failures, fixing on request contrast.md
Formats Choosing a notation, converting, gamut and P3 fallbacks color-formats.md
Review output format Severity scale, findings table, verification, verdict review-output.md

Core Principles

1. Match the Project's Color System

Reuse the project's existing tokens and notation. Introducing a second color representation to fix one value makes the palette harder to reason about, not easier — a consistent hex system beats a hex system with oklch() scattered through it. Notation is not a defect. For a genuinely new system, oklch() is the best default because its numbers behave the way the ramp rules below describe; everywhere else a color library produces the same ramp in whatever the project writes (color-formats.md).

2. A System Is Ramps, Not Colors

One neutral ramp, one accent ramp, and only the status ramps the product actually renders. A warning ramp nothing imports is maintenance for zero pixels, and a second accent hue earns its place only when two things must be distinguishable at a glance.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

better-colors is a skill published in the GitHub repository boraoztunc/skills (321 stars, last pushed 26d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 134 tokens to every session and 1,881 once invoked, about $0.0007 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
