/whatsapp-messages — read WhatsApp messages

Arguments passed: $ARGUMENTS (free-form, e.g. "anything new from Sam?")

Reading happens through the read_messages MCP tool (from this plugin's WhatsApp server), with list_chats for an inbox-style overview and search_messages for keyword lookups. read_messages returns threads labelled Chat/Group with timestamped messages (each tagged with its {id:…}, which you can use for react or reply_to) — any conversation, like a mail connector reads any email. If the tools are missing or error with not linked, run /whatsapp-setup.

The sync model (read this once)

wacli reads from a local synced store, and the read tools refresh it first (a bounded, best-effort wacli sync). So:

  • Reads are fresh to within a sync pass; the very latest message may take a moment to appear. If a read looks like it's missing something recent, try again, or suggest leaving wacli sync --follow running.
  • Older history that WhatsApp never pushed may simply not be in the store. For a specific chat, deeper history can be requested from the phone with wacli history backfill --chat <jid> (best-effort, phone must be online) — mention this only if the user is hunting for old messages.

Resolve who they mean

Names resolve against synced WhatsApp contacts/chats (wacli's local store), not an OS address book.

  1. A phone number or JID in the arguments → pass it straight to read_messages as chat.
  2. A name → pass it as chat (the tool resolves it), or first confirm with list_contacts / list_chats to be sure you've got the right person. Ambiguous or no match → ask the user for the number, or have them make sure that contact has synced (wacli contacts refresh).
  3. No specific person ("catch me up") → call read_messages with no chat for the most recently active threads (or list_chats for a lighter overview).
  4. A group ("the family group") → find it with list_groups or list_chats (group rows show name + JID); pass the JID as chat.
