trove-secret-scan

trove-secret-scan is a skill for Claude Code from bravew/trove. It costs 27 tokens per session (419 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A file-scanning guide for finding accidentally committed secrets such as API keys, access tokens, private keys, passwords, and other credentials.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to scan source files and history, identify common credential patterns, distinguish test placeholders, rotate exposed keys, remove secrets, and move them to environment variables or a secret manager.
Why use it?
It helps detect credentials before they are misused and explains the follow-up steps when a secret has been exposed.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00027 $0.00419
Opus 5 $0.00014 $0.00210
Sonnet 5 $0.00005 $0.00084
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

trove-secret-scan scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Session Init

This skill ships Trove conventions. Prefer existing project patterns over generic best practices when they conflict.

Secret Scanning

Patterns to Detect

Pattern Regex Severity
AWS Access Key AKIA[0-9A-Z]{16} Critical
AWS Secret Key [A-Za-z0-9/+=]{40} near "secret" Critical
GitHub Token gh[ps]_[A-Za-z0-9_]{36,} Critical
Slack Token xox[baprs]-[0-9a-zA-Z-]+ Critical
Generic API Key [a-zA-Z0-9]{32,} near "api_key" Warning
Private Key -----BEGIN.*PRIVATE KEY----- Critical
JWT Token eyJ[A-Za-z0-9_-]+\.eyJ[A-Za-z0-9_-]+ Warning
Password in URL ://[^:]+:[^@]+@ Critical

Remediation Steps

  1. Immediately rotate the exposed credential
  2. Remove the secret from code
  3. Add to .gitignore if it's a file
  4. Use environment variables or secret manager
  5. Check git history: git log --all -p -- <file> for old commits
  6. Consider BFG Repo-Cleaner if secret was ever committed

False Positive Handling

  • Test fixtures with dummy keys: annotate with # noqa: secret
  • Example/template files: use placeholder format <YOUR_API_KEY_HERE>
  • Hash values and UUIDs: not secrets, skip
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
