hv-maintenance

hv-maintenance is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from bryanjbelanger/desktop-hypervisor-mcp. It costs 64 tokens per session (504 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A desktop virtual-machine inventory and cleanup helper for VirtualBox or VMware. A virtual machine is a computer simulated inside another computer.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to list machines, inspect stopped machines and their disk usage, find old snapshot chains, check image-cache size, and prepare the removal of unwanted virtual machines after confirmation.
Why use it?
It shows which virtual machines, snapshots, and cached images use disk space before suggesting safe cleanup.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00064 $0.00504
Opus 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00202
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00013 $0.00101
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00050

Measured 2mo ago against content hash 6ec307efb9c2, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

hv-maintenance scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Inventory & cleanup

Preflight

Requires the desktop-hypervisor MCP server: confirm mcp__hypervisor__vm_info is available. Missing → stop; register with claude mcp add --scope user hypervisor -- <binary> (MCP Registry: io.github.bryanjbelanger/desktop-hypervisor-mcp) and restart the session. Run the inventory per ready provider (provider action=list, then pass provider= to scope each pass).

This skill is read-heavy and delete-careful: enumerate fully, propose, get explicit confirmation, then delete.

Inventory pass (always safe)

  • vm_info action=list vs action=running → the stopped set
  • vm_info action=show vm=NAME per stopped VM → specs and disk footprint
  • snapshot action=list vm=NAME tree=true → deep or stale snapshot chains (deltas are often where the disk actually went)
  • Image cache: ~/.hypervisor-images (or HV_IMAGE_DIR) grows by design — idempotent downloads; report its size and note it's safe to prune old images.
  • Provider-native orphans (unregistered disks, stale media entries) are outside the neutral surface: use execute_command with the provider's own argv (VBoxManage list hdds / closemedium; vmrun listSnapshots etc.) and say which provider you're driving.

Cleanup rules

  • NEVER delete without listing exactly what will be removed and getting a yes — a "stale" VM may be the user's long-term environment.
  • VM removal: vm_lifecycle action=stop vm=NAME hard=true (if running) → vm_lifecycle action=delete vm=NAME (removes the VM and its files).
  • Confirmed-good changes: delete their safety snapshots (see hv-snapshot).

Report

Table: item, provider, size/age, reason flagged, action taken or proposed. Totals for space reclaimed vs. reclaimable-pending-approval.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
