gf-smell

gf-smell is a skill for Claude Code from byx-darwin/gitflow-cli. It costs 71 tokens per session (3,405 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A detector for code smells and complexity hotspots. Code smells are structural signs that code may be hard to understand or change, such as very long functions or deeply nested logic.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find refactoring candidates, large or overburdened structures, and other architectural patterns that deserve inspection.
Why use it?
It shows where maintenance may be difficult without changing the code or pretending that a finding is automatically a defect.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00071 $0.03405
Opus 5.5 $0.00028 $0.01362
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00681
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00341

Security

Grade A, and why

gf-smell scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 24d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

gf-smell — Code Smell & Complexity Hotspot Detection

Three-stage judgement protocol: candidate → verify → confirm. Language-agnostic protocol in this file; language-specific detection in references/<lang>.md. Detection only — never auto-fix. This skill writes its report to docs/, so it does not use the read-only permission profile.

Preconditions

  • Read access to the target source tree
  • The language layer's tooling installed (see references/<lang>.md); missing tools degrade, never improvise

When to Use

English 中文 Context
code smell detection 代码坏味道检测 find structural problems
complexity hotspots 复杂度热点 which code is hardest to change
long function / deep nesting 超长函数 / 深层嵌套 threshold-based scan
god structure 上帝结构 too many responsibilities in one unit
refactor candidates 重构候选 where to start refactoring

When NOT to Use

Scenario Why Not Use Instead
Fixing the smells found This skill detects and reports only /gf-refactor for behavior-preserving fixes, or /gf-workflow for the full pipeline
Pre-delivery quality gate This skill measures structure, not gate pass/fail /gf-quality
Secret / vulnerability scanning Different problem class /gf-security-check
Reviewing a PR diff This skill scans a tree, not a diff verdict /gf-pr-review
Lowering thresholds to silence findings This skill never edits policy configuration User decides after reviewing the report

Core Rule: A Threshold Breach Is a Candidate, Not a Conclusion

Every number a tool emits is a candidate signal. It becomes a finding only after Stage 2 verification reads the actual code. Reporting raw tool output as findings is the single most common failure of this skill.

Stage 0: Scope

Resolve the scan scope before running anything.

  1. User-specified path or diff range; default is the whole source tree.
  2. Always exclude these directories — they contain build output, vendored code, or working-tree copies that would triple-count the same file:

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

gf-smell is a skill published in the GitHub repository byx-darwin/gitflow-cli (3 stars, last pushed 22d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 71 tokens to every session and 3,405 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-17.
