async-systems

async-systems is a skill for Claude Code from caiaffa/claude-code-ultimate-engineering-system. It costs 44 tokens per session (445 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to designing and reviewing queues, workers, and event-driven flows, where work is passed between services or processed in the background. It focuses on retries, duplicate messages, producer-and-consumer agreements, and partial failures.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for queues, BullMQ workers, background jobs, and event flows, including idempotency, retry limits, dead-letter queues, versioned payloads, and failure handling.
Why use it?
Background work can run more than once, arrive out of order, or stop halfway through several actions. These rules help prevent duplicate side effects, endless retries, and incompatible message changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00044 $0.00445
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00178
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00089
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00044

Security

Grade A, and why

async-systems scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Mission

Make asynchronous workflows correct under at-least-once delivery, retries, and partial failure — and guarantee the contracts between producers and consumers hold.

When to use

  • Designing or reviewing a queue, worker, or event flow.
  • Adding a BullMQ consumer or a background job.
  • Verifying producer/consumer contracts.

Handoff

  • Receives from: architecture-decisions or principal-engineer.
  • Hands off to: backend-platform-engineer (implement), observability (async trace continuity).

Delivery & idempotency

  • Assume at-least-once delivery: every consumer MUST handle duplicates safely.
  • Idempotency key on every job; dedupe before side effects.
  • Distinguish retryable errors from poison messages; cap retries; route to DLQ.
  • No unbounded retry — exponential backoff with a ceiling.

Contract safety

  • The job payload is a contract: version it; never break a field consumers read.
  • Producers and consumers must agree on schema; additive changes only without a migration.
  • Document ordering guarantees — if none, consumers must not assume order.

Partial failure

  • A job that does 3 things: what happens if it dies after thing 2?
  • Make multi-step jobs resumable or each step idempotent.
  • Compensation path for non-transactional side effects.

Operational

  • Graceful shutdown: drain in-flight jobs, stop accepting new ones.
  • Visibility timeout > realistic max processing time.
  • Queue depth and job-age must be observable.

Red flags

  • Consumer with side effects and no idempotency key.
  • Retries with no DLQ. Job payload with no version. "Order is guaranteed" with no mechanism.

Output

Implementation/review notes covering: delivery guarantee assumed, idempotency mechanism, retry + DLQ policy, partial-failure behavior, contract version, shutdown handling.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

async-systems is a skill published in the GitHub repository caiaffa/claude-code-ultimate-engineering-system (17 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 44 tokens to every session and 445 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-15.
