In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure Jira project and component mappings, validate `.github/.jira_sync_config.yaml`, and fix reported errors.
Why use it?
It removes the manual work of setting up and auditing the synchronization settings, while identifying configuration errors before use.

About the project

Canonical Copilot Collections is a repository for organizing and distributing GitHub Copilot instructions, prompts, agents, and skills across Canonical repositories. Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00071 $0.00615
Opus 5.5 $0.00028 $0.00246
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00123
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00061

Security

Grade A, and why

configure-gh-jira-sync-bot scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured yesterday.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/validate_config.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Configure gh-jira-sync-bot

Reference: https://github.com/canonical/gh-jira-sync-bot and canonical/platform-engineering-charm-template#165.

Workflow

  1. Check whether .github/.jira_sync_config.yaml exists. If so, keep user-specific values (project key, mappings) and only align it with the template.

  2. Copy assets/jira_sync_config.template.yaml to .github/.jira_sync_config.yaml when missing.

  3. Ask the user which Jira component(s) the repository belongs to and set settings.components (a list, case-sensitive names). Valid names are listed in VALID_COMPONENTS of scripts/validate_config.py. Change jira_project_key only if the project is not ISD.

  4. Validate:

    uv run scripts/validate_config.py .github/.jira_sync_config.yaml

Or, without a local copy of the skill:

    uvx --from "git+https://github.com/canonical/copilot-collections#subdirectory=groups/platform-engineering/skills/configure-gh-jira-sync-bot" validate-jira-sync-config .github/.jira_sync_config.yaml

Fix every reported error and re-run until it prints OK.

  5. Remind the user that the GitHub App of the bot must be installed on the repository.

Template conventions

  • Keep the 3-line # template-version header; removing it opts the file out of template propagation.
  • labels: [bug, enhancement] prevents "Dependency dashboard" issues from being synced.
  • label_mapping: bug: Bug, enhancement: Story.
  • No epic_key.
  • add_gh_comment: true.

Mandatory fields (checked by the validator)

settings.jira_project_key, settings.status_mapping.opened, settings.status_mapping.closed, a non-empty settings.components list of known Jira components, and settings.labels containing bug and enhancement. settings.epic_key must not be defined. Every template in .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/ (next to the config) must have a labels key containing bug or enhancement.

Refreshing the component list

Jira has no component listing through the Atlassian MCP server. Query project = ISD AND component is not EMPTY with fields: ["components"] and update VALID_COMPONENTS.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
