boxel: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/motion-drag/SKILL.md

motion-drag is a skill for Claude Code from cardstack/boxel. It costs 90 tokens per session (882 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to moving elements with pointer input and to changing the order of items by dragging them. It includes boundaries, momentum, swipe dismissal, and draggable lists or grids.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for draggable panels, bottom sheets, swipe-to-dismiss cards, and reorderable lists or grids.
Why use it?
It handles the difficult parts of pointer movement, such as limits, release behavior, and dragging from a separate control. It also provides a way to connect a changed order to the application's item list.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00090 $0.00882
Opus 5.5 $0.00036 $0.00353
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00176
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00088

Security

Grade A, and why

motion-drag scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 82 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Drag and reorder

Drag ({{motion drag=…}})

Motion's own pan/drag session, inlined from framer-motion's build:

<div {{motion drag=true dragConstraints=this.container dragElastic=0.2}} />
  • drag: true / "x" / "y"; dragDirectionLock, dragPropagation, dragListener.
  • dragConstraints: an object ({ top, left, right, bottom }), an element, or a {current} ref; re-measured on resize. dragElastic, dragMomentum, dragTransition, dragSnapToOrigin.
  • createDragControls() + dragControls= for starting a drag from another element (snapToCursor). whileDrag for the pressed style; onDragStart / onDrag / onDragEnd / onDirectionLock.
  • Pan without displacement: onPanStart / onPan / onPanEnd.
  • Rotated/scaled parents: transformPagePoint with correctParentTransform(); SVG viewBox: transformViewBoxPoint().
  • Interactive children (inputs, selects, contenteditable) don't start a drag; drag composes with layout / layoutId and works mid-scroll.

Reorder

import { ReorderGroup, ReorderItem } from 'glimmer-motion';

<ReorderGroup
  @values={{this.items}}
  @onReorder={{this.setItems}}
  @axis='y'
  as |group|
>
  {{#each this.items as |item|}}
    <ReorderItem @group={{group}} @value={{item}}>{{item.label}}</ReorderItem>
  {{/each}}
</ReorderGroup>

@group is required: it is the context <ReorderGroup> yields.

ul/li with ...attributes; axis "x" / "y" / "xy" (wrapped lists), detected from layout when omitted; auto-scrolls a scrollable ancestor near its edges; works inside <Presence>.

Mobile rules (learned the hard way here)

  • drag sets touch-action on its element itself (none for true, pan-y for "x", pan-x for "y", so a one-axis drag leaves the other axis to the page). Any OTHER surface that owns a gesture — pan handlers, a custom pointer stage (.follow-stage), the scrubbers — needs touch-action: none in CSS, or the scroller steals the gesture on iOS.
  • Buttons/controls get touch-action: manipulation to kill double-tap zoom.
  • Hover-revealed controls don't exist on touch — provide a @media (hover: none) always-visible fallback (the inbox delete button).
  • A released drag that should return home reads best as an elastic spring (type: 'spring', visualDuration, some bounce) — see follow-pointer.gts's release.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

motion-drag is a skill published in the GitHub repository cardstack/boxel (27 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 90 tokens to every session and 882 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-21.
