boxel: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/motion-presence/SKILL.md

motion-presence is a skill for Claude Code from cardstack/boxel. It costs 94 tokens per session (792 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to animating elements as they enter or leave the page. Its presence component keeps a removed element rendered until its exit animation has finished.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for adding and removing list items, toast messages, modals, panels, and multi-step screens.
Why use it?
Normally, removing an element from the page removes it immediately, leaving no time for an exit effect. This handles lists, dialogs, notifications, and other content that must animate out.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00094 $0.00792
Opus 5.5 $0.00038 $0.00317
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00158
Haiku 4.5 $0.00009 $0.00079

Security

Grade A, and why

motion-presence scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 71 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Arriving and leaving: <Presence>

An element Glimmer has removed is gone — there is no frame left to animate. <Presence> keeps a removed item rendered until its exit finishes.

import { motion, Presence, to } from 'glimmer-motion';

const keyOf = (todo) => todo.id;

<Presence @items={{@todos}} @key={{keyOf}} as |todo h|>
  <li
    {{motion
      presence=h
      initial=(to opacity=0 x=-20)
      animate=(to opacity=1 x=0)
      exit=(to opacity=0 x=20)
    }}
  >{{todo.title}}</li>
</Presence>
  • @key decides identity (same job as key on {{#each}}). The block yields the item and a handle; the handle goes into presence= on the element that owns the exit. h.isPresent is tracked.
  • Single conditional element? Model it as a 0-or-1-item array (get panel() { return this.open ? [{ id: 'panel' }] : NO_PANEL; } — see packages/choreo-gallery/realm/shell/gallery-grid.gts).
  • @mode: "sync" (default — leavers and newcomers together), "wait" (newcomer holds until the leaver finishes), "popLayout" (leaver out of flow immediately so siblings close up; @anchorX/@anchorY available).
  • @initial={{false}} skips the first-render entrance. Caution: the presence context is inherited — blocking the first entrance blocks it for every motion node inside the block too. If children animate on mount, prefer computing initial per item (the gallery grid's cardInitial) over @initial={{false}}.
  • @onExitComplete, @custom (for exit-direction), nested presence under a leaving parent: @propagate={{true}} @parent={{outerHandle}}.

The rule that bites

A leaving child stays live. React freezes a leaver's tree; a Glimmer block re-runs from live tracked state while the leaver plays its exit. So anything the exit needs — the label the panel showed, the row the modal flew from — must ride on the item <Presence> yields, not be read back out of state that has already moved on. The modifier freezes an exiting element's props, but your template's own bindings are yours to keep stable.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

motion-presence is a skill published in the GitHub repository cardstack/boxel (27 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 94 tokens to every session and 792 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-21.
