Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.
| Model | Per session | Once invoked |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $0.00167 | $0.01774 |
| Opus 5.5 | $0.00067 | $0.00710 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $0.00033 | $0.00355 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $0.00017 | $0.00177 |
Grade A, and why
realm-server-test-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 87 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.
Realm-server test setup
Bringing up a realm on an empty database indexes it from scratch, and that index — not the test body — is usually most of a realm-server test's time. A module that brings up its realms in beforeEach pays it once per test. Index once per module instead: every helper below builds a template database the first time a module needs it, and each test then starts from a copy of that template. The two cached realm helpers also give each test a fresh realm directory holding the same files. setupTestDatabaseTemplate copies only the database, so there the fresh directory is your start's job (see below).
The cost is real. A 40-test suite that brought up two realms before every test took 524s; indexed once into a template it took 85s. Nineteen such suites together went from 46 minutes to 13 minutes of CI time, about five minutes off every Realm Server shard.
The @cardstack/boxel/realm-server-test-template-database lint rule enforces this. It reports a setupDB whose beforeEach brings up realms (runTestRealmServer, runTestRealmServerWithRealms, startSimpleRealmServer, or start() on a createRealm realm, directly or through a function in the same file) and passes no templateDatabase, and a setupPermissionedRealm or setupPermissionedRealms call without mode: 'before'. CI Lint fails on both. The rule checks only that a template is there, not what it holds, so a template that leaves out some of the module's realms passes it: keep build and beforeEach bringing up the same realms.
Pick the helper
| Your module brings up | Use |
|---|---|
| One realm | setupPermissionedRealmCached(hooks, { realmURL, permissions, fileSystem | fixture, onRealmSetup }) |
| Several realms, each on its own realm server | setupPermissionedRealmsCached(hooks, { realms: [...], onRealmSetup }) |
| Several realms on one realm server, or any other setup of your own | setupTestDatabaseTemplate beside setupDB (below) |
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

realm-server-test-setup is a skill published in the GitHub repository cardstack/boxel (27 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 167 tokens to every session and 1,774 once invoked, about $0.0007 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-21.
