boxel: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/search/SKILL.md

search is a skill for Claude Code from cardstack/boxel. It costs 103 tokens per session (1,465 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A map of the platform's search API and the places that call it or display its results. An API is an interface that software uses to request data, and a search result may be prerendered HTML or a live card serialization.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding a search call, fetching results in the host application, rendering result rows, or working with single-realm and federated search.
Why use it?
It prevents new search code from bypassing the shared entry API or assuming every result has the same format. It also shows which server endpoints, host resources, and UI components belong together.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00103 $0.01465
Opus 5.5 $0.00041 $0.00586
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00293
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00146

Security

Grade A, and why

search scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Search — the entry API

Search is one engine exposed as the entry API. An entry is a heterogeneous result: the engine prefers prerendered HTML (the fast path) and falls back to a live serialization per row. The governing invariant: a consumer never assumes whether a result came back as prerendered HTML or a live card — it renders the entry transparently.

Quick map

When you need to… Use
Search from the realm / over HTTP /_search, /_federated-search
Fetch results in a host resource getSearchEntriesResource (host/app/resources/search-entries)
Render a result list in host UI <SearchResults> (host/app/components/card-search/search-results)
Render a result list from a card @context.searchResultsComponent
Type a single result row RenderableSearchEntryLike (runtime-common/search-results-component)
Get instances programmatically StoreService.search(query, realms?) → CardDef[]
Get raw wire data (host only) StoreService.searchEntries(query, realms?)

Realm server / API

  • /_search (single realm — Realm.searchEntriesResponse) and /_federated-search (realm-server — handleSearch) emit the entry document natively (heterogeneous html / item results).

Host

  • Resource: getSearchEntriesResource(parent, () => query) → a reactive { entries, isLoading, meta, errors }; subscribes per realm and re-issues on invalidation.
  • Component: <SearchResults @query=… as |results| /> renders the heterogeneous stream — prerendered HTML inert (lazily hydrated) or a live card. Used block-less it renders the default stream itself.
  • Programmatic split (StoreService): search returns instances only (hydrates full serializations into the Store); searchEntries returns the raw wire format (host-only — the cards-facing Store interface omits it). Commands (SearchCardsByQueryCommand, SearchAndChooseCommand, …) ride search → instances.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

search is a skill published in the GitHub repository cardstack/boxel (27 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 103 tokens to every session and 1,465 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-21.
