Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.
| Model | Per session | Once invoked |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $0.00403 | $0.09256 |
| Opus 5.5 | $0.00161 | $0.03702 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $0.00081 | $0.01851 |
| Haiku 4.5 | $0.00040 | $0.00926 |
Grade A, and why
secrets-at-rest scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 666 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.
Secrets at rest (operators)
Stored secrets are sealed by the application before they reach the database,
with AES-256-GCM from Node's crypto, by SecretsKeyring in
packages/realm-server/lib/secrets-at-rest/envelope.ts. Each sealed value is
four things a table stores: keyId (which data key sealed it), nonce
(12 bytes), ciphertext and tag (16 bytes).
Envelope
- A 32-byte data key seals every secret. KMS wraps it; the wrapped blob
lives in SSM as
/<env>/boxel/SECRETS_WRAPPED_DATA_KEYand reaches the task asSECRETS_WRAPPED_DATA_KEY, with the key's ARN asSECRETS_KMS_KEY_ARN. - The realm server and the worker manager each call
kms:Decryptonce, at startup, then seal and open locally. Each worker the manager starts or respawns asks the manager for the keys over their IPC channel instead of calling KMS. A KMS outage stops new tasks from starting but never a running one, a worker respawn included, and no request makes a KMS call. - The KMS client takes its region from the key ARN and gives up on a call after 5 s to connect or 10 s to answer, with 3 attempts.
- The unwrap uses the encryption context
{"purpose": "boxel-secrets-data-key"}. The key policy lets only the realm-server and worker task roles decrypt, and only under that context. CloudTrail records each unwrap.
Binding
Each value is bound, as GCM additional authenticated data, to the field it is
stored in (<table>.<column>, required), the owner, the row id and the
destination the secret is sent to. A value moved to another column, row, owner
or destination by a database writer doesn't open: the caller gets
SecretDecryptionError, whose message names none of the inputs. Naming the
field is what keeps two secrets on one row, such as an OAuth client secret and
its refresh token sent to the same token endpoint, from being swapped.
- A secret with no destination yet (a key added before its first approval) is
sealed under field, owner and id only.
keyring.reseal(sealed, from, to)binds it to its destination; after that it opens only with that destination. secretEncryptionContext(binding)is the context a value is bound to:field,owner,idanddestination_sha256. The destination appears only as its SHA-256, so the context is safe to log or to hand to a service that records it.- Destinations are compared exactly as given. A caller passes the same normalized form when sealing and opening.
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

secrets-at-rest is a skill published in the GitHub repository cardstack/boxel (27 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 403 tokens to every session and 9,256 once invoked, about $0.0016 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-21.
